[0:38] minister say, "People really want

[0:40] peace." The rally ended and the prime

[0:43] minister began to walk toward his car.

[0:45] He did not make it. A young Jewish law

[0:48] student, an Israeli, had worked his way

[0:50] to within a few feet of Yeetsak Rabin,

[0:53] raised a gun, and fired three shots.

[0:57] Today in Jerusalem, Yeetszak Rabin's

[0:59] body is lying in state.

[1:02] Tomorrow, once mers have had a chance to

[1:05] pay their respects, there will be a

[1:07] funeral attended by many heads of state,

[1:09] President Clinton among them.

[1:13] >> We did not imagine we would have to

[1:15] bring you news this morning of the death

[1:16] of a peacemaker, but that is the subject

[1:19] of our cover story to be reported by

[1:21] Terrence Smith.

[1:25] The exuberant joy of a peace rally

[1:28] turned into a tragedy in Tel Aviv last

[1:30] night stunning Israel and the world. Yet

[1:34] Rabin, the warrior who led his nation

[1:37] towards peace, was cut down by a fellow

[1:40] Israeli. This Sunday morning, we'll

[1:43] remember the life of this soldier,

[1:45] diplomat, and statesman.

[1:47] >> To everything, there is a season and a

[1:52] time. to every purpose under heaven.

[1:57] >> We will talk later on this morning about

[1:59] the terrible turn of events in the

[2:00] Middle East with Bob Simon in Jerusalem

[2:03] and Rita Braver in Washington and with

[2:06] Fouad Ajami here in New York. It will be

[2:09] hard to move on, but we will to the
