[0:06] Good evening. This is the CBS [music]
[0:08] Evening News. Dan Rattle reporting.
[0:11] Stalemate and outrage. Those are the
[0:13] words tonight as defiant Cuban inmates
[0:15] still hold more than 100 hostages at US
[0:18] federal prisons in Atlanta and Oakdale,
[0:20] Louisiana. The prisoners are banishing
[0:23] makeshift weapons. They remain cool to
[0:26] President Reagan's reversal of policy
[0:27] and his offers to delay deportation. Our
[0:30] coverage of two fiery standoffs begins
[0:33] with Bill Whitaker.
[0:35] Fires flared at the Atlanta Federal
[0:37] Penitentiary again today. Cuban inmates
[0:40] are still in control. A day and a half
[0:42] after riots first erupted, there is one
[0:45] confirmed inmate death, 15 injuries, and
[0:48] some 70 prison workers still held
[0:50] hostage. At least two ill hostages were
[0:52] released. The roundthe-clock
[0:54] negotiations are at a stalemate.

[1:08] requests or demands. The inmates want
[1:11] amnesty and a guarantee they will not be
[1:13] deported to Cuba. They threatened to
[1:15] kill hostages if authorities use force.
[1:18] In an intercepted radio transmission,
[1:20] one hostage said they are all fine, but
[1:22] pleaded for official calm.
[1:24] >> I think negotiation must continue uh to
[1:27] take place. Uh we cannot uh have a blood
[1:30] bath here.
[1:31] >> Some 300 inmates not part of the
[1:33] insurrection were moved to a more secure
[1:35] section of the prison. Families of the
[1:38] prisoners still inside keep vigil across
[1:40] the street.
[1:45] Janet Lugo talked to her husband inside
[1:48] the
