[0:01] We now join world news now

[0:04] >> and steering in of another citycore

[0:07] skyscraper, a glass tower. He noted the

[0:09] devastating effects of a bomb. Quote,

[0:11] "Each piece of glass becomes a potential

[0:14] flying piece of cutthroat shrapnel."

[0:16] Barro also concluded he could avoid

[0:18] scrutiny by using stretched limousines,

[0:20] preferably black, not white, and filling

[0:23] them with explosives or gas cylinders.

[0:25] All part of quote a synchronized,

[0:28] concurrent, back-to-back execution on

[0:30] the same day and time. Authorities found

[0:34] other surveillance reports on buildings

[0:35] in Newark, New Jersey, and Washington

[0:37] DC. But in the end, Barro apparently

[0:40] decided that security in the US was too

[0:42] tight. And when he was arrested, he was

[0:45] making plans to attack buildings and

[0:46] subways in London. Brian Ross, ABC News,

[0:50] New York.

[0:52] A University of Miami football player

[0:53] was shot dead outside his home after

[0:55] leaving practice last night. Police

[0:57] called to a Miami apartment complex,

[0:59] found the body of Brian Pa in the

[1:01] parking lot. Thought it was a senior and

[1:02] was expected to be selected in next

[1:04] spring's NFL draft.

[1:06] >> Finally, in the Pacific Northwest, a

[1:08] break from 5 days of relentless rain.

[1:10] But the record-breaking storm has left a

[1:12] trail of misery in parts of Washington

[1:14] and Oregon. At least one home was washed

[1:16] away and hundreds of others are being

[1:18] threatened by rising rivers. And along

[1:20] the Oregon coast, three homes are still

[1:23] on the brink of being washed into the

[1:24] ocean.

[1:25] >> So, you can imagine that perhaps the

[1:27] last thing on their minds right now is

[1:29] the state of the election and the House

[1:31] and Senate, which

[1:33] >> Senate still up for grabs.

[1:34] >> Yeah, the Washington results are in. I

[1:36] mean, quite a few people did come out to

[1:37] the polls even though it was probably

[1:39] miserable getting there.

[1:40] >> Absolutely.

[1:41] And you think about a lot of situations

[1:43] where weather starts to play an adverse

[1:45] impact. And you know, one of these these

[1:47] sort of political strategists that are

[1:48] somewhere inside the beltway probably

[1:49] sit there and calculate based on weather

[1:51] maps. We have a better chance of

[1:53] mobilizing the base today or not.

[1:55] >> Absolutely. And we have some interesting

[1:56] breakdowns based on exit polls on who

[1:58] who favor Democrats this time around who

[2:00] maybe didn't last time. And we have a

[2:02] little time later this half hour.

[2:03] Hopefully we'll get to that and chat

[2:04] about it. Still to come on World News

[2:05] Now, politics in perspective, a unique

[5:19] Today,

[5:21] >> the final two revealed live. Dancing

[5:24] with the stars. The results ABC tonight.

[5:37] After the attacks on September 11th, the

[5:38] president has made patriotism a core

[5:40] value in his campaigns. A strategy which

[5:42] has given him public support even for

[5:44] the war in Iraq. But as the BBC's George

[5:47] Alga finds, in the historic city of

[5:49] Annapolis, being patriotic can now mean

[5:51] not supporting the war. a light for you

[5:53] >> at Chick and Ruth's Diner on Main

[5:55] Street. Your hash browns and eggs over

[5:58] easy come with a big helping of

[6:00] patriotism.

[6:02] >> I aliance to the flag of the United

[6:06] States of America.

[6:08] >> Not so long ago, being a patriot meant

[6:11] backing the war in Iraq. Not anymore.

[6:13] Now it means worrying about the men and

[6:15] women in harm's way. It's very

[6:17] frightening if you read the paper every

[6:19] day and you see the age of these young

[6:22] people, both men and women, 19, 20, 21,

[6:26] who never had a chance to have a life.

[6:28] It's very disturbing.

[6:30] >> And few here can see an honorable end to

[6:33] it all.

[6:34] >> You know, everybody thinks we bring them

[6:35] home, it everything will rupt.

[6:39] And if we leave them there, we're

[6:41] sacrificing our people for something

[6:43] right now we can't see an end to.

[6:48] Now, despite all the complaints we've

[6:50] heard in there, it's worth remembering

[6:52] that come tomorrow morning, George Bush

[6:54] will still be in the White House. These

[6:56] elections are not about a change at the

[6:58] top. They may not even lead to a change

[7:00] in policy, but they may well measure the

[7:03] changing mood of a nation.

[7:12] Down the road at the US Naval Academy, a

[7:15] new generation of officers. This is a

[7:17] place steeped in America's 18th century

[7:20] fight for independence from Britain. For

[7:22] many of those watching, that proud

[7:24] tradition has now been politicized. The

[7:27] blame game between Democrats and

[7:28] Republicans over Iraq, symbolic of a

[7:31] wider malaise.

[7:33] >> You listen to the campaign ads and

[7:35] they're so nasty, but they're nasty on

[7:37] the part of both sides. It's just

[7:40] overwhelming. People People are tired of

[7:42] that. They they don't want to hear any

[7:43] more of that. They'd like somebody to

[7:45] come in and and solve problems rather

[7:47] than just putting the blame on somebody

[7:49] else.

[7:51] >> Anapapolis was once America's capital at

[7:53] a time when it took control of its own

[7:55] affairs. Now people want control over

[7:58] politics. That's not just about choosing

[8:01] parties, but making them listen.

[8:04] >> And uh that was David Alger from the BBC

[8:07] reporting. Interestingly, voters who

[8:09] felt Iraq was the number one issue

[8:11] facing this country, 61% voted in favor

[8:14] of Democrats. That's something we had

[8:15] seen in polls leading up to the

[8:16] election, but something we saw confirmed

[8:18] in exit polls.

[8:20] >> And you know, and these exit poll

[8:21] numbers are going to be chewed up and

[8:23] sort of analyzed to death in the next

[8:25] couple of days. And one of the things

[8:26] that uh President Bush is going to have

[8:28] to address tomorrow at some point is the

[8:29] fact that the country, at least in terms

[8:31] of the House, decided to go against his

[8:33] policies. And some of these protests,

[8:35] some of these votes were protests for

[8:36] his administration. Some of these were

[8:37] support for the candidates that were not

[8:39] Republicans.

[8:40] >> Absolutely. And a lot of young voters,

[8:41] the 18 to 29 year old demographic, 60%

[8:44] in favor of Democrats, 38 Republicans.

[8:46] So, interesting mix there. Also, the

[8:48] president, as we mentioned earlier in

[8:50] broadcast, 1:00 this afternoon, he'll be

[8:52] speaking.

[8:52] >> All right. Uh we're going to have some

[8:54] overseas news in a bit here and uh we're

[8:56] going to be back with Declan Curry in a

[8:59] little bit

[8:59] >> and uh David Brinkley. We're going to go

[9:01] back into the video news vault and uh

[9:03] it's always a good good time when we do

[9:04] that.

[9:05] >> All right, stay with us.
