[0:33] >> Coin News 6 at 11 starts now.

[0:37] >> Now for Portland, Southwest Washington,

[0:39] and all of Oregon. This is Coin News 6

[0:42] at 11 p.m. news that's to the point. The

[0:47] legal community mourns as Chief Justice

[0:49] William Renist dies of complications

[0:51] from thyroid cancer. A spokesperson says

[0:53] he was in Arlington, Virginia with his

[0:56] three children by his side. Thank you

[0:58] for joining us. I'm Eric Taylor in for

[0:59] Ken Body

[1:00] >> and I'm Alexis Delid. We'll have more on

[1:02] the passing of Chief Justice Renquist a

[1:04] bit later, but first the latest on

[1:06] Hurricane Katrina. A thousand hurricane

[1:09] victims may soon be headed to Portland,

[1:11] Oregon. Red Cross volunteers have been

[1:13] getting ready in southeast Portland most

[1:15] of the day. Kai News 6 reporter Core

[1:17] Harland is here now with the story.

[1:19] Core. Well, Alexis and Eric school

[1:21] district maintenance people worked to

[1:22] resurrect plumbing and electricity in a

[1:24] building that's been boarded up for more

[1:26] than two decades now. Red Cross,

[1:28] meanwhile, began work this afternoon to

[1:31] make the abandoned school, Washington

[1:32] Monroe, home for up to a thousand people

[1:35] displaced by the flooding in the Gulf

[1:37] Coast.

[1:41] James Walker spent a better part of his

[1:43] Saturday afternoon flopping open CS on

[1:45] the gym floor at the old Washington

[1:47] Monroe High School.

[1:49] This was probably not James original

[1:51] plan for Saturday, but he says he's

[1:53] happy to help people who could use it

[1:55] quite a bit.

[1:56] >> It makes me feel pretty good actually

[1:57] knowing I can help someone else that is

[1:59] that's in a situation that's not very

[2:01] good right now.

[2:02] >> You want to save those ones that need to

[2:03] be assembled cuz we put those up in the

[2:05] classrooms later on.

[2:06] >> Sounds good.

[2:07] >> Volunteers unloaded three semi-trailers

[2:09] full of Red Cross supplies. A separate

[2:11] trailer from Nike contained a thousand

[2:13] pair of shoes for people when they get

[2:15] here. People living near the school seem

[2:18] anxious to see who's coming.

[2:20] >> I think there's a bunch of people I've

[2:22] talked to in the neighborhood so far. Uh

[2:25] they kind of feel like they don't know

[2:27] what to do to help.

[2:28] >> GT says he and his neighbors will likely

[2:30] make an effort to extend a stranger's

[2:32] hand in friendship to people who've been

[2:35] Mother Nature's enemy recently.

[2:39] Red Cross isn't sure exactly when flood

[2:41] victims might come to Portland, but the

[2:43] fact Portland has been chosen to host

[2:45] flood victims is a big deal.

[2:46] >> Not only significant for these people

[2:48] who have gone through so much, but it's

[2:50] very significant for Oregon to have a

[2:52] national disaster relief operation

[2:55] happen here in a non-disaster

[2:56] environment.

[2:58] >> It'll be a long way from home, a long

[3:00] way from the flood, the heat, and the

[3:02] humidity.

[3:05] But Portland Red Cross volunteers will

[3:07] try and make it as much like the real

[3:09] home as possible. Now, Washington Monroe

[3:12] High School may not actually handle all

[3:14] of the people needing shelter according

[3:16] to the Red Cross. And depending on the

[3:17] number actually coming to Oregon, Red
