[0:00] Pride meets Monterey Friday at 7 on Coin

[0:02] TV.

[0:06] >> Cracking down on crime, the president

[0:08] pushes for new federal laws, especially

[0:10] gun control.

[0:12] >> Heavy crop damage in the Midwest and a

[0:14] prolonged drought in the Southeast. Will

[0:17] they result in higher food prices this

[0:19] fall?

[0:20] >> And the Pope comes to America. Tonight,

[0:22] a special report on moral authority

[0:25] versus Western rebellion.

[0:28] This is the CBS Evening News

[0:33] with Dan Rather and Connie Chung.

[0:36] Good evening. Fresh off his victory on

[0:39] deficit reduction, President Clinton is

[0:41] plunging into a campaign for another

[0:43] major bill. This one on crime reduction.

[0:46] The goal is to get illegal guns off the

[0:49] streets and put more police officers

[0:52] back on. Correspondent Linda Douglas

[0:54] begins our coverage.

[0:56] President Clinton ran for office as a

[0:58] law and order Democrat. Today, he

[1:01] unveiled his crime fighting agenda, a

[1:03] mix of stiffer sentences, gun control,

[1:05] and alternative forms of punishment.

[1:08] >> The plan is not as tough. It is fair. It

[1:11] will put police on the street, and

[1:13] criminals in jail.

[1:14] >> Under this proposal, Mr. Clinton will

[1:15] become the first president to actively

[1:17] fight for gun control laws. He urged

[1:20] passage of a law requiring a 5-day

[1:22] waiting period to purchase a handgun.

[1:24] And he also issued an executive order

[1:26] banning the import of assault pistols.

[1:28] Imported assault rifles already are

[1:30] banned. Like last year's failed

[1:32] Republican plan, this one would extend

[1:34] the federal death penalty to some 50

[1:36] crimes and limit federal inmates to one

[1:39] appeal. Fulfilling a campaign promise.
