[0:00] Tonight,
[0:02] if you've gotten some of your things
[0:03] taken away at the airport, you might be
[0:05] able to get them back. We'll tell you
[0:07] where the TSA turns to sell your stuff.
[0:10] Plus, some of us had a messy drive home
[0:12] from the holiday weekend. But could snow
[0:15] be on its way for tomorrow morning's
[0:17] commute? We'll have your first live
[0:19] local forecast. But first, they went
[0:22] looking for a Christmas tree, but now
[0:23] the search is on for a missing family of
[0:26] six. They said they found tracks and
[0:28] footprints, but they don't know if
[0:31] that's theirs.
[0:32] >> Team coverage of the search in the
[0:34] mountains is First on Fox.
[0:37] >> Good evening. Thanks for joining us. I'm
[0:38] Wayne Garcia
[0:39] >> and I'm Shauna Parsons. First on Fox
[0:41] tonight, a family of six is missing in
[0:43] the mountains after a Christmas tree
[0:44] hunt. The two adults and four kids told
[0:47] friends they'd be in the Lost Lake area
[0:49] near Mount Hood looking for a tree
[0:50] yesterday, but the family never came
[0:53] home. Rescuers believe they're in an
[0:54] area around Lolo Pass Road. We have live
[0:57] team coverage tonight. KPTV's Jim Hyde
[0:59] will have reaction from those
[1:00] desperately waiting on the family safe
[1:02] return. But we begin with KPTV's Hillary
[1:04] Hutcherson live in Hood River with the
[1:06] latest on the search. Hillary?
[1:09] Yeah, we're at the Hood River County
[1:10] Sheriff's Office where we've just
[1:12] learned that the sheriff and the under
[1:14] sheriff have personally joined their
[1:16] deputies in an all-night search for the
[1:18] family. They told us that just moments
[1:20] ago they found tire tracks on a Forest
[1:22] Service back road and they have just
[1:24] begun to follow those tracks. So, we'll
[1:26] see how that develops. Also, we know
[1:28] that Clackamus County has joined in the
[1:29] search as well.
[1:32] >> County Sheriff's Office.
[1:33] >> Tonight, it's a juggling exhibition as
[1:35] Hood River County dispatchers manage
[1:37] calls from local and national media and
[1:40] coordinate a dual agency search for the
[1:42] missing Vancouver family,
[1:43] >> trying to find out, you know, when they
[1:46] were last seen, where they were going to
[1:47] be going. National Forest is pretty
[1:49] large, so where they were going to go to
[1:51] get their Christmas tree.
[1:52] >> Randy Kellums, his four daughters, ages
[1:54] 4, 7, 9, and 14, his live-in girlfriend
[1:57] Tam Waricki, and their golden retriever
[2:00] are missing. When they didn't return
[2:02] home yesterday from a Christmas tree
[2:03] hunt in Hood River County's Lost Lake
[2:05] area, a relative called 911.
[2:09] Deputies on snowmobiles roared over the
[2:11] freshly widened landscape today,
[2:13] searching for any sign of the family.
[2:15] >> We're looking for distress signs. We did
[2:17] check a couple side roads that kind of
[2:19] drop off down where there was some
[2:20] Christmas trees, but there was this it
[2:22] was just total snow. There was no
[2:24] markings of any uh vehicle going down
[2:26] there. And we also looked for footprints
[2:28] and there was no footprints.
[2:29] >> This would be the second night the
[2:31] Kellum spanned in the forest and the
[2:33] sergeant says the urgency grows by the
[2:35] minute
[2:35] >> up in this area. Um it the clouds can
[2:38] suddenly move in and it can start
[2:40] dumping a lot of snow.
[2:41] >> But a lead tonight in the dispatch
[2:43] center. A hunter called in to report
[2:45] seeing the missing family driving
[2:46] yesterday afternoon on a paved road in
[2:49] the Lost Lake area.
[2:50] >> We're not sure which route they went
[2:51] back home.
[2:54] >> Now, Randy Kellum's truck is a 2003 gray
[2:58] full-size Toyota Tundra pickup with a
[3:00] canopy and the words Pacific
[3:02] Communications written in white
[3:03] lettering on the side with an emblem of
[3:06] an eagle. Now, we're told the family
[3:08] likely has warm clothing and maybe some
[3:10] food and water, but certainly not
[3:11] prepared to spend one night, let alone
[3:13] two nights in the national forest.
[3:15] Reporting live tonight in Hood River,
[3:17] Hillary Hutcherson, the 10:00 news.
[3:19] >> As searchers comb the area around Mount
[3:21] Hood, searching for the Kellum's family,
[3:23] Ry's mother and ex-wife in Vancouver can
[3:25] only sit at home and wait for news.
[3:27] KPTV's Jim Hyde talked with Ry's family
[3:30] today and continues our team coverage
[3:31] live in Vancouver. Jim,
[3:33] >> that's right, Wayne. We are outside the
[3:34] home now where his mother, Randy
[3:37] Kellum's mother, and his ex-wife are
[3:38] indeed waiting patiently in Vancouver,
[3:40] waiting for word from the searchers,
[3:43] hoping that the four girls, her
[3:45] ex-husband and his friend are simply
[3:47] stuck in the new fallen snow together.
[3:51] >> This morning, Kim called me and said
[3:53] they weren't back yet, and so we came
[3:55] right over here and started making phone
[3:57] calls.
[3:58] >> Deborah Carter met her former
[3:59] daughter-in-law at Ry's home. That's
[4:01] where he daughters Madison, Emily,
[4:04] Autumn, and Jessica, ages four to 14,
[4:07] were to return by Saturday night. Ry's
[4:10] girlfriend Tam Waricki also joined in
[4:12] the trip to Mount Hood to cut a
[4:14] Christmas tree. Hood River Sheriff's
[4:16] search and rescue team members were
[4:17] joined by Clackamus County deputies this
[4:19] evening. They searched in the snow while
[4:21] Deborah Carter and Kim Kellums tried to
[4:24] pinpoint on a map where the six people
[4:26] could be. Kim was particularly concerned
[4:28] about 9-year-old Autumn, who takes daily
[4:31] medication for seizures.
[4:32] >> She has autism and seizures um caused
[4:35] from the bright light. So, I'm mainly
[4:38] concerned of the snow and the brightness
[4:40] of it.
[4:40] >> The women are trying to remain positive
[4:42] about the prospects, though the six
[4:44] people in Randy Kellum's four-wheel
[4:46] drive truck are more than 24 hours
[4:48] overdue.
[4:49] >> They said they found tracks and
[4:51] footprints, but they don't know if
[4:54] that's theirs or somebody else's. Both
[4:56] women say they talked by phone with the
[4:57] sheriff's department in Hood River and
[4:59] they're waiting for some good news.
[5:01] >> They need to get their buns home.
[5:03] >> A neighbor here in Vancouver tells me
[5:05] tonight that Randy Kellum's headed to
[5:07] Lost Lake Road to look for a Christmas
[5:09] tree last year. This year they hope the
[5:11] search is just taking a little bit
[5:13] longer and that they all they will all
[5:15] six be found soon. Reporting live here
[5:18] in Vancouver, Jim Hyde, the 10:00 news.
[5:21] >> Tomorrow's commute could be slowgoing.
[5:23] Tonight, temperatures are dropping and
[5:25] we could wake up to some snow or ice on
[5:27] the roads tomorrow. We have team
[5:29] coverage tonight. Fox 12 chief
[5:30] meteorologist Mark Nelson will have the
[5:32] latest information in his forecast. But
[5:33] we begin with KPTV's Kevin Quarry who's
[5:36] live in the West Hills to tell us how
[5:37] the weather is affecting people in our
[5:38] area tonight. Kevin? Right. And Sean, in
[5:40] just the last 10 to 15 minutes, we've
[5:42] started seeing some rain mixed with
[5:43] snow. It's too faint for the camera to
[5:45] pick it up, but it's been falling pretty
[5:46] steadily out here. Also dropping
[5:48] steadily has been the temperature. Our
[5:49] thermometer bouncing between about 35
[5:51] and 36° out here tonight. Now, people we
[5:54] talked to tonight who know Portland
[5:55] weather well say these are the kind of
[5:57] conditions they've just come to expect.
[6:03] Earlier tonight, drivers had no problem
[6:05] navigating the roads one of Portland's
[6:07] highest spots, but streets like this
[6:09] could look a lot different in the
[6:11] morning.
[6:11] >> I live in Portland.
[6:13] You never know what it's going to do.
[6:15] Five, wait 5 minutes, it'll change.
[6:17] Susan Hughes was out in the elements
[6:18] tonight. And a main reason she relies
[6:20] solely on public transit is the weather.
[6:23] >> Crazy drivers out there that drive 70
[6:25] mph when it's pouring down rain and it's
[6:28] slick out there or it's icy out there.
[6:30] It's easier to ride try.
[6:32] >> Other riders have no problem braving the
[6:34] roads in winter. Gary Beck usually
[6:36] drives himself.
[6:37] >> I have a Jeep actually and I have u you
[6:40] know gets it's four-wheel drive and I've
[6:42] got snow tires. It gets around pretty
[6:44] good.
[6:46] But earlier today, mother nature gave
[6:48] Portland a taste of what she can
[6:50] deliver. High winds knocked out power to
[6:52] hundreds of homes and knocked down
[6:54] several trees.
[6:55] >> We heard what we thought was lightning
[6:57] or something. Some horrendous crash.
[6:59] >> Jerry Osako and his wife were napping
[7:01] when the rain soaked ground gave way,
[7:03] sending this tree right into their
[7:05] house.
[7:08] It took creative cutting and some fancy
[7:11] footwork to get it all down with a price
[7:13] tag of $100 an hour.
[7:16] >> That's the going rate for a Sunday, I
[7:18] guess.
[7:18] >> The tree hit right above the master
[7:20] bathroom, clipping the gutter and
[7:22] putting a hole in their home, but no one
[7:23] was hurt. And while some consider
[7:25] today's weather a warning, others take
[7:27] it all in stride.
[7:29] >> I'm never prepared. No, I just take it
[7:31] like it goes. You know, I don't I'm not
[7:33] prepared. Okay, just wait and see.
[7:35] >> Just wait and see.
[7:37] Well, Portland city officials tonight
[7:39] say their crews are prepared. Plows,
[7:41] deicing equipment, and sanders are all
[7:43] chained up and ready to go just in case
[7:45] things do pick up overnight. Reporting
[7:47] live in the West Hills tonight, Kevin
[7:48] Kawari, the 10:00 news. Well, they slog
[7:51] through all sorts of bad weather for a
[7:53] living in 65,000 lbs of steel. And
[7:55] truckers perhaps know better than
[7:57] anybody how important it is to be
[7:59] mindful of your own driving and the
[8:01] driving of others when travel conditions
[8:02] get treacherous. We caught up with one
[8:04] trucker today as he was chaining up at
[8:06] government camp. Calvin Pierce also took
[8:08] time to help a fellow road warrior who
[8:10] got stuck. Pierce was delivering pallets
[8:12] for Costco when he hit the slick roads.
[8:14] But Calvin says more than anything, it's
[8:16] other drivers who create the big hazards
[8:18] in stormy weather.
[8:20] >> Mostly the four-wheel drive pickup
[8:22] trucks and SUVs, they go way too fast.
[8:26] Like they can go 50 m hour out here,
[8:28] they think, but really should only be
[8:30] going 30, 35. and he told us, "Be sure
[8:33] to never cut off a big rig because that
[8:36] could cause the trailer to jack knife."
[8:38] Even drivers headed to the coast had to
[8:40] deal with some snowy conditions. Snow's
[8:41] been falling in higher parts of the
[8:42] coast range and piling up in some areas.
[8:45] Dana and Jay Ashlin drove to the coast
[8:47] today. They just moved to Portland from
[8:49] Camp Pendleton, California. That's near
[8:50] San Diego, and say they're having to
[8:53] adjust to the weather.
[8:55] >> I talked to a friend today. He said he
[8:57] was in flipflops and shorts today. So,
[9:00] it's a lot different.
[9:02] And there is a snow chains advisory for
[9:04] travelers coming through that area this
[9:06] evening. Drivers should also prepare for
[9:08] the possibility they may not able to see
[9:10] too well throughout the night.
[9:12] >> As if the snow and the rain just weren't
[9:13] enough, a small earthquake rocked the
[9:15] Northwest this evening. But don't be
[9:16] surprised if you didn't feel it. The
[9:18] magnitude 2.7 quake was 14 miles deep
[9:21] and hit just after 6:30 tonight.
[9:24] Seismologists say it was centered about
[9:25] 2 miles west northwest of Malala.
[9:31] And we have been telling you about snow
[9:32] around the metro area that could fall
[9:34] tonight. Fox 12 chief meteorologist Mark
[9:36] Nelson is here now. Mark, is the snow
[9:38] coming down in the West Hills yet?
[9:39] >> Yeah, we've had some reports of flurries
[9:41] up there. We also saw it in our tower
[9:42] cam at about 1,800 feet. And what we
[9:44] want to avoid is this at Sanm Pass uh
[9:46] earlier this evening about 4:30. Big
[9:48] traffic pile up all the folks coming
[9:50] back from central Oregon. But take a
[9:52] look over here at our live radar. And
[9:53] what you see is lots of showers
[9:55] streaming inland. And it looks like
[9:56] that's going to continue the next 24
[9:58] hours. We don't really have a big storm
[9:59] headed towards us. In fact, here's the
[10:01] full view. And you can see a band of
[10:02] showers just move through the metro
[10:04] area. That's when we did see those
[10:06] showers in the middle of town and also
[10:07] up in the West Hills. Looks like some
[10:09] showers up maybe around Germantown Road
[10:11] up there. Also around Banks and Forest
[10:12] Grove, but heavier showers out on the
[10:14] east side of town. We think the snow
[10:16] level right now is at about 1,400 ft.
[10:18] That's 1,400 ft. And it's going to drop.
[10:20] So, there is a snow advisory for all
[10:22] areas west of the Cascades except the
[10:24] coast range and a winter storm warning
[10:25] for the Cascades. We'll give you that
[10:27] updated forecast, let you know if you've
[10:29] got to do your homework for tomorrow
[10:30] morning and you're headed to school.
[10:31] That's coming up.
[10:32] >> Okay. And as you know, snowy and rainy
[10:33] conditions often go handinhand with
[10:35] power outages. And here are some numbers
[10:37] that you'll want to keep handy to report
[10:39] an out outage in your area. For PGE, the
[10:41] number in Portland is 503-464-777.
[10:46] If you're outside the Portland area, you
[10:47] can call 1800-544-1795.
[10:50] For Clark Public Utilities, it's
[10:52] 360-9928000.
[10:55] And you can always get the latest road
[10:57] conditions by calling 511. And children
[11:00] did go to bed tonight, not with G, not
[11:02] just with dreams of snow, but also
[11:04] wondering if the snow will close
[11:06] tomorrow, close schools. Well, school
[11:07] districts from around the state will be
[11:09] collecting weather related information
[11:10] throughout this evening. And
[11:12] administrators will then decide if
[11:14] they'll cancel classes or open one to
[11:16] two hours late. Now, that decisions
[11:18] usually be made about 5 or 6:00 in the
[11:20] morning, depending on the district. One
[11:22] of the biggest concerns, of course, is
[11:24] whether the buses can take kids safely
[11:26] to and from school. Stay tuned to Fox 12
[11:29] for continuing coverage of the weather.
[11:30] We'll have a full forecast later in this
[11:32] newscast. And tomorrow on Good Day
[11:34] Oregon, we'll update you on all the
[11:35] traffic alerts and tell you which
[11:37] schools may be delayed. And Good Day
[11:40] Oregon will start a little early
[11:41] tomorrow so you can get all the news you
[11:42] need. That begins at 4:30.
[11:46] >> The 10:00 news is just getting started.
