[0:00] Today, the landscape of

[0:02] >> firet trucks were used to block the

[0:03] runway. About 90 people were being held

[0:06] hostage aboard the airliner by four men

[0:08] who claimed they were heavily armed.

[0:10] British authorities decided the hijack

[0:12] would end at standstill. It was decided

[0:15] that it had gone on long enough and that

[0:17] um as the plane had arrived in Britain,

[0:20] um it was up to us to deal with it and

[0:22] and finish the the business once and for

[0:24] all. And so we determined that that

[0:26] plane would never leave here once it had

[0:28] arrived here. and we had no intention of

[0:30] making any concessions that would in any

[0:32] way help or encourage people to hijack

[0:35] airplanes. The police arranged for the

[0:38] hijackers to talk with a former

[0:39] Tanzanian foreign minister who now leads

[0:41] an opposition movement in exile. That

[0:44] seemed to provide a breakthrough in what

[0:45] police called slow and patient

[0:47] negotiations. By midafternoon, many of

[0:50] the hostages were allowed off the plane

[0:52] until finally the hijackers, whose

[0:54] families were also on board, agreed to

[0:56] surrender. We came to an agreement with

[0:59] them that the weapons will be brought

[1:00] off by two small children. And so two

[1:03] children who form part of the families

[1:05] that had gone on board with the

[1:07] hijackers actually came off the airplane

[1:10] first carrying the weapons.

[1:13] The weapons turned out to be one 38

[1:15] caliber revolver, two imitation guns

[1:17] made of wood, and a wooden hand grenade.

[1:20] Police say the four men seized the

[1:22] airplane to focus attention on their

[1:23] complaints about conditions inside
