[0:08] Ellie Jamie.

[0:13] Escape, Calvin Klein.

[0:54] Exotic birds on the loose in New York at 11.

[1:01] How is O.J. playing in America's breadbasket?

[1:04] We have grist for the mill.

[1:05] I think people just hired her to stick me it up.

[1:08] Her name is Daisy, but this flower grows in the sand.

[1:10] Well, now I know what it's like to put on a condom.

[1:13] She's picture perfect.

[1:14] Come on, it's me!

[1:15] Plus, a Travolta exclusive...

[1:17] Is actually the coolest character I've ever played.

[1:20] ...and an embraceable you.

[1:23] It's not a very pleasant food.

[1:25] This is Entertainment Tonight for Tuesday, February 7th, 1995.

[1:37] Hi, everybody.

[1:38] Welcome to Entertainment Tonight.

[1:39] I'm John Tesh.

[1:40] And I'm Mary Hart.

[1:41] When the white bronco rolled down the freeway with police in slow pursuit,

[1:45] millions of Americans sat glued to their television sets watching the drama unfold.

[1:49] But all these months and stories later,

[1:52] does O.J. Mania still exist across America?

[1:55] To find out, we send Entertainment Tonight correspondent Jerry Grant to the Heartland,

[1:59] and we switch now live to him in a very blustery Council Bluffs, Iowa.

[2:03] Hi, Jerry.

[2:03] Hello, Mary.

[2:05] Wind chill 15 degrees below zero builds character.

[2:08] You take a map and fold it in half both ways.

[2:10] Open it up.

[2:11] The center point would be right here in the Heartland.

[2:13] We're overlooking the mighty Missouri River.

[2:15] There's Nebraska in the background in the city of Omaha.

[2:18] We came here because O.J. is such a big story in L.A. and New York.

[2:21] I'm in the middle of the media zoo every day.

[2:23] But what about those just plain folks?

[2:25] How do they view the O.J. trial?

[2:27] We took a road trip to find out.

[2:31] At truck stops and barber shops, burger joints and watering holes,

[2:35] O.J. is still the talk of the town.

[2:38] But here in the Heartland, truck drivers like Mark Mayer tell me they're sick of the trial.

[2:43] You turn on morning, it's on the morning.

[2:46] You turn on ESPN, it's the highlights of it.

[2:49] You turn on CNN, it's, I mean, they've got, it's like Watergate almost.

[2:54] It's on every 24 hours a day.

[2:56] O.J., everywhere you look on TV, how do you feel about that?

[3:01] Well, like I said, it's time out for it.

[3:03] I don't have enough of it.

[3:04] And if it was anybody else, it wouldn't be getting, he wouldn't, it wouldn't be getting half the publicity.

[3:09] It's much the same story at Omaha's Louis M.'s Burger Lust Restaurant.

[3:14] But I spoke with a few folks who still have an appetite for the Simpson trial.

[3:18] You see it on television all over.

[3:20] Do you think there's too much coverage?

[3:21] I kind of enjoy it.

[3:23] Why is that?

[3:24] I don't know, just something different.

[3:26] I do, I watch it all the time.

[3:28] Across the country, O.J. Mania still lives in big cities like Detroit.

[3:33] But now, things are more subdued.

[3:35] Well, I think everyone's getting a little bit sick of it.

[3:38] It's kind of like something that you hate to watch, but you can't turn it off.

[3:42] One day I feel one way, I think, oh, he has to be innocent.

[3:45] And the next day I think, he's guilty.

[3:47] I don't know.

[3:48] I'm glad I'm not on the jury.

[3:50] And in smaller Midwestern towns like Muscatine, Iowa, we found a mix of opinions.

[3:56] I inadvertently watched one show one day, and I couldn't pull myself away from the TV.

[4:02] The first time I saw that, I was hooked.

[4:04] Just because he's a celebrity, and just because he's on trial for murder, he doesn't need to be in our face every time we turn around.

[4:13] I think it's ridiculous.

[4:14] In party towns like New Orleans, they've got better things to do.

[4:18] I just never hear anything else about O.J. Simpson.

[4:21] I'm not saying that I don't follow it.

[4:23] I follow it.

[4:23] It's interesting news.

[4:24] Don't get me wrong.

[4:25] But I don't think it deserves front-page coverage every day.

[4:27] But out in Las Vegas, people are still willing to take a gamble on the trial.

[4:32] Of course, everybody says, well, they're sick of it and tired of it, but they're still yet...

[4:37] They've got to get home and watch the news or watch the trial and see what's coming off, you know.

[4:42] I enjoy the media's coverage of it.

[4:44] It's very enlightening.

[4:45] It gives us an insight into the justice system and how it really works.

[4:49] I think, ultimately, the justice system will do its job.

[4:52] It's just going to take a lot longer than it would if it were an average guy on the street.

[4:57] So, as you can see, a lot of people don't know what they want.

[5:00] That puts broadcasters in a tough position.

[5:02] Too much O.J. people might turn away.

[5:04] Not enough O.J. people might turn away.

[5:06] John and Mary, back to you in warm Los Angeles.

[5:09] Jerry, thank you.

[5:10] You really have crisscrossed the nation.

[5:12] Are the folks that you have talked about that are into the O.J. trial concerned about the details?

[5:16] Do they want to see the details?

[5:18] A lot of people are living their lives.

[5:19] They've got two kids.

[5:20] They've got the PTA meetings.

[5:21] A lot of people are into what I like to call O.J. light.

[5:24] That's the nightly wrap-up at night.

[5:26] They want to see that.

[5:27] One woman told me she's the kind of person that looks for the shortest service in church on Sundays.

[5:32] So she looks just for the O.J. wrap-up at night.

[5:34] And one more thing.

[5:35] They're very interested in O.J., but people out there are also saying,

[5:38] How's that South Dakota girl doing in Los Angeles?

[5:41] And Mary, I gave them your cat.

[5:43] I appreciate that, Jerry.

[5:44] And greetings to all of them, too.

[5:46] Thank you very much, Jerry Grant.

[5:47] There are already two best-selling books about the Simpsons saga,

[5:50] and a third may be about to join the chase.

[5:52] The author, A.C. Cowlings, O.J.'s friend and the man behind the wheel of that world-famous white bronco.

[6:00] 911, what are you reporting on?

[6:01] This is A.C. I have O.J. in the car.

[6:04] In a proposal for a new tell-all book,

[6:07] A.C. is promising to reveal what really went on inside that bronco

[6:10] during the infamous slow-speed chase.

[6:12] He also plans to attack Nicole Brown Simpson as a promiscuous drug abuser.

[6:17] Steve Schragus is one publisher who's read the proposal and rejected it.

[6:20] If you look at it in the best light,

[6:22] then what he did is help save O.J.'s life.

[6:25] He would have killed himself had he not received that help.

[6:28] Worst light is that he tried to help him escape.

[6:31] I think this sort of tarnishes it,

[6:33] that he's making an effort to go after this now dead woman

[6:38] and say nasty things about her.

[6:41] Cowlings' book would be a counterpoint to Raging Heart,

[6:43] which was written with the help of Nicole's family,

[6:45] and Private Diary of a Life Interrupted by Nicole's friend, Faye Resnick.

[6:49] Both of those books claim O.J. repeatedly beat Nicole.

[6:53] Nicole looked resigned, abject, depressed, and fearful all at the same time.

[6:57] Suddenly O.J. came back, snarling, cursing, threatening Nicole.

[7:01] A.C. and O.J. were teammates and have been lifelong friends,

[7:03] as seen in this documentary, Juice on the Loose.

[7:06] Cowlings has visited O.J. in jail,

[7:08] but there are no reports that any proceeds from the proposed book

[7:11] would go to O.J.'s defense.

[7:13] And many people we spoke with think A.C. is just trying to cash in.

[7:16] I think he's doing it for the money, for the publicity, yeah.

[7:19] If he were really his friend, he'd take the book, he'd write it,

[7:22] he'd give him the money for the trial.

[7:24] Don't look for A.C. to make an immediate fortune.

[7:26] A new California law triggered by the Simpson case

[7:29] prohibits witnesses and jurors from selling their stories

[7:32] before the case is settled.

[7:34] Show business is a life of ups and downs, ins and outs.

[7:37] Robin Givens is out of Hilton Head.

[7:39] Jessica Lange is in Vanity Fair.

[7:41] Details in today's E.T. Gazette, and we're dishing them out.

[7:47] Jessica Lange graces the cover of the new Vanity Fair magazine

[7:50] that hits newsstands tomorrow.

[7:52] Inside, she talks to writer Kevin Sessoms

[7:54] about rumors that her longtime relationship with Sam Shefford is on the rocks.

[7:58] I asked if the rumors were true, if they were still a couple,

[8:01] and she pointedly said we're still a family, which is a little good one.

[8:07] Robin Givens delivered a knockout punch

[8:09] to former boxing champ Mike Tyson

[8:11] when she divorced him back in 1989.

[8:13] Now Givens is getting knocked out herself.

[8:15] She's being evicted.

[8:17] The landlord of her $500,000 Hilton Head, South Carolina rental home

[8:21] says she owes $12,000 in back rent.

[8:24] And if Givens wants to contest the eviction,

[8:26] she has to plead her case in state court.

[8:30] Coming up on E.T.,

[8:31] Travolta packs a punch,

[8:33] and Rene Russo pulls out her props.

[8:35] Daisy's popping out all over.

[8:37] It's Miami.

[8:38] They've seen West before.

[8:40] And get off my back.

[8:41] We'll show you something that'll really scare you.

[8:44] You know, a Carnival cruise is the best vacation value going.

[8:48] You can enjoy fun days at sea,

[8:50] fun-filled nights,

[8:52] fabulous food.

[8:54] Oh, boy, you can say that again.

[8:57] Great Scott Willard,

[8:58] what are you doing out here?

[8:59] Kathy, I'm having the time of my life.

[9:01] Mwah!

[9:02] Take a three-, four-, or seven-day vacation on Carnival,

[9:05] the most popular cruise line in the world.

[9:07] Boy, I can't wait until the midnight buffet.

[9:10] You think you'll have any room left?

[9:11] What are you, a comic?

[9:15] Rene Russo throws away her cleavage.

[9:17] Gene Hackman puts in his teeth.

[9:19] How can John Travolta top that?

[9:20] Find out next.

[9:23] Mothers protect and care for the health and safety of their children

[9:27] in many different ways.

[9:31] And when it comes to relieving fevers,

[9:34] moms listen to their pediatricians

[9:36] who overwhelmingly recommend children's Tylenol.

[9:40] It's the first choice of pediatricians.

[9:42] They know Tylenol has no aspirin or ibuprofen,

[9:46] just the proven medicine that effectively relieves fevers.

[9:49] Children's Tylenol,

[9:50] the first choice of pediatricians.

[9:53] I love my job.

[9:55] The airline industry is fascinating.

[9:57] It's always different.

[9:58] If they're looking for an exciting career,

[10:00] they want to travel,

[10:01] this is the place.

[10:03] And I interviewed against 300 people

[10:06] for a position in the flight attendant.

[10:08] There was about 30 of us hired.

[10:10] And I got it.

[10:11] They teach you everything.

[10:13] You learn every aspect that you need

[10:15] to get a job,

[10:16] to enjoy your job,

[10:17] and do well at it.

[10:18] Choose the school the airlines use.

[10:20] International Air Academy.

[10:21] Call today.

[10:24] Scientists have found that there's some kind of psychic connection

[10:26] between Portland, Oregon and Reno.

[10:29] Have you felt this at all?

[10:30] Absolutely.

[10:31] Hot.

[10:32] Car.

[10:33] Hot.

[10:34] August.

[10:34] Vibe in on the imagery on your head.

[10:36] Okay.

[10:38] Uh...

[10:38] Getting married in Reno.

[10:40] No, it's not getting married in Reno.

[10:42] It's the Reno Air Races.

[10:43] Oh, my God.

[10:44] Who knew?

[10:45] Rodeo.

[10:46] That's right.

[10:47] A Rodeo.

[11:00] Chocolate Lovers.

[11:01] Nestle Sweet Success.

[11:03] It's the only diet that starts with Nestle

[11:06] and ends with sweet success.

[11:09] If you're trimming inches,

[11:11] you can trim your budget, too,

[11:12] with Safeway's February coupon book.

[11:14] Inside, you'll find terrific low prices

[11:15] on Nestle Sweet Success snack bars

[11:17] and ready-to-drink.

[11:18] When it comes to sweet savings,

[11:19] nobody does it better for less than Safeway.

[11:30] John Travolta's back in the land of the big paydays

[11:32] with his new film.

[11:33] He could earn a reported $5 million for Get Shorty,

[11:36] but he's still hanging out with lowlifes.

[11:38] E.T.'s Bob Gowen paid a visit to the star on the set.

[11:41] We think you ought to turn around and go back to Miami.

[11:44] You're a stuntman, huh?

[11:45] Yeah.

[11:46] You any good?

[11:47] Am I any good?

[11:48] Who is this f***ing help?

[11:49] Oh!

[11:52] John Travolta is toughing it out again

[11:54] in Get Shorty.

[11:55] After his huge success as hitman Vincent Vega

[11:57] in Pulp Fiction,

[11:59] John is now playing a much brighter guy,

[12:01] a semi-gangster who gets involved in Hollywood.

[12:03] He's kind of like a street James Bond.

[12:06] If you can get out of here

[12:07] before I take my jacket off,

[12:09] I won't wipe up the floor with you

[12:10] and mess up your pretty little costume.

[12:12] It's the only way I get to play James Bond.

[12:14] I mean, otherwise, I'm not going to be able to play

[12:17] an Englishman in a real James Bond picture.

[12:19] Would you have actually done that?

[12:20] I'd love to have done that.

[12:21] Really?

[12:21] That was one of my favorite characters, yeah.

[12:23] I mean, when they were looking for...

[12:27] Sure, I would have done that in a New York second,

[12:31] but, you know,

[12:32] it's just easier for me to do something like this instead.

[12:35] Rough business is movie business.

[12:37] I may have to go back to Lone Shocking

[12:38] just to take a rest.

[12:40] The film is actually a comedy

[12:42] with much of the humor directed at Hollywood

[12:44] and movie making.

[12:45] Rene Russo plays a former B-movie scream queen,

[12:48] and Gene Hackman is a horror movie producer.

[12:50] Old-style Hollywood producer, horror films,

[12:54] kind of, as you can see,

[12:57] kind of 70s look, you know, the sideburns.

[13:00] Right.

[13:00] I wear these and, uh...

[13:02] Oh, that's nice.

[13:04] So I can...

[13:04] Oh, you got it.

[13:06] Yeah.

[13:06] That madman running amok on the set is Danny DeVito.

[13:10] He has a small part in the film,

[13:11] playing a reclusive actor superstar

[13:13] who has this billboard dominating Sunset Boulevard.

[13:16] But Danny is also one of the producers of the film.

[13:19] Can we put Travolta for trying out loud?

[13:22] Danny says his kids were instrumental

[13:24] in giving him the idea to get Travolta for the film.

[13:27] You know, I have three children.

[13:28] One of their favorite movies is Grease.

[13:30] Oh, right.

[13:30] So I see John all the time,

[13:32] you know what I'm saying?

[13:33] You know, in those periods, you know,

[13:34] I mean, you know, we all sing the song,

[13:37] sometimes I'm Olivia Newton-John,

[13:38] sometimes they're Olivia Newton-John,

[13:40] sometimes I'm John, you know?

[13:42] You don't put the wig on and everything.

[13:44] No, I don't do any of the, you know,

[13:45] any of the stuff in the, you know...

[13:47] Sometimes they're dressed in the tight black pants.

[13:49] Well, you can get away with it.

[13:50] Yeah, you gotta do that.

[13:51] If you have a leg, you might as well do it.

[13:53] What kind of a producer is Danny?

[13:55] Ask director Barry Sonnenfeld.

[13:57] It's just great having him around,

[13:59] although he ruins a lot of takes

[14:00] because whenever he listens on the headphones,

[14:02] he laughs hysterically while we're shooting scenes.

[14:06] Most people are saying that.

[14:07] They're saying there's John Travolta and his driver.

[14:12] Since it's a comedy, the mood on the set is light.

[14:15] John is always clowning around between takes.

[14:18] And Renee revealed a little more about her character

[14:21] than I was ready for.

[14:22] It's a departure for me.

[14:24] I took the role because I wanted

[14:25] to have large breasts in a belt.

[14:31] And the fact is,

[14:33] they're not even mine.

[14:37] On that note,

[14:38] I will tactfully fade out of here.

[14:40] Bob Goan, Entertainment Tonight.

[14:42] Thank you, Bob.

[14:43] For Renee Russo,

[14:44] the movie is a reunion with John Travolta.

[14:45] She did a screen test with him in 1979

[14:47] for Urban Cowboy,

[14:49] but Deborah Winger, of course,

[14:50] wound up with the part.

[14:51] Get Shorty is due out in the fall.

[14:53] A horror novel comes alive

[14:55] and oozes from every page

[14:57] in the new movie,

[14:57] In the Mouth of Madness.

[14:59] But if goop won't get you,

[15:01] there's also a nasty creature

[15:02] and a guy who knows how to stir it all up.

[15:05] Action!

[15:09] It's a typical set of a John Carpenter movie,

[15:11] spooky looking with lots of moody lighting.

[15:16] The movie is called

[15:17] In the Mouth of Madness

[15:18] and stars Sam Neill

[15:19] as a man slowly driven mad

[15:21] by a series of strange events

[15:22] orchestrated by bad guy Juergen Prochnow.

[15:32] you you throw someone in there's pretty much like everybody in the audience and

[15:37] and put them through the old dishwashing machine and see what happens at the other end

[15:47] director john carpenter is famous for making scary movies such as halloween and the thing

[15:52] in fact the horror genre is bursting out of him all the time even during a break and shooting

[16:00] it's very good you try to keep it loose so that you can be creative because the worst thing in the

[16:06] world is to have a situation where it's tense and nothing very good gets done i have no notes

[16:19] the spooky atmosphere is enhanced by plenty of ooze creeping out of the cracks captain of the ooze

[16:25] patrol is greg nicotero we're not really sure what color john's gonna want so we made this is your

[16:30] sort of this is exorcist green this we got uh clear human stuff this is your sort of sludge black take

[16:41] a look at another strange creation the crew has nicknamed him elvis he kind of represents

[16:46] jürgen's really nasty side a series of cables and remote controls brings elvis to life oh yeah

[16:51] everything i do will do to make the monster jürgen had to have a plaster cast made of his face

[16:59] not a fun experience the cast in your in your face and around your head it's like being in a grave i

[17:07] would say this is uh it's not a very pleasant feeling

[17:11] comfy

[17:12] but perhaps the toughest job falls on julie carmen she has to fondle the thing

[17:24] but it's pretty obvious she's having fun with the task at hand

[17:27] you know i'm completely in a trance at that moment so i have no judgment whatsoever i'm not a judgmental

[17:37] person anyway which is why i'm doing a horror film

[17:50] elvis is the little guy among the creatures in the movie another one is 18 feet long and takes 20

[17:55] people to operate in the mouth of madness is in theaters now ready for your weekend mary

[18:01] brett butler spends every episode of her comedy series coping with her job her kids and her ex now

[18:17] family her neighbors her boyfriends well there appears to be another and not recent addition to

[18:22] the inner circle uh this is uh your mother yeah i can hold something's not right about him but you'll see

[18:44] tracking a serial killer the clock is ticking as williams struggles to find a murderer who might be

[18:49] connected to his identity timothy busfield has no doubts who the suspect is how'd you find that cabin

[18:54] jack my house is 10 miles from there i knew there was red clay i've been hunting those hills for 20

[18:59] years i never knew about it there's an enormous amount of self-doubt which is fueled by a character
