[0:00] Allied planes down an Iraqi MIG and
[0:03] knock out an armored column. And in
[0:05] Washington, tight security tonight for
[0:07] the president's State of the Union
[0:08] speech.
[0:11] >> This is NBC Nightly News with Tom
[0:14] Brokall. Tonight, America at war.
[0:19] Good evening. As we approach the end of
[0:21] week two of Operation Desert Storm, the
[0:24] war remains mostly a one-way street with
[0:26] the United States and its allies
[0:28] carrying the battle night and day to
[0:30] Iraq and Kuwait, while Saddam Hussein
[0:32] talks boldly but barely fights back so
[0:35] far. Tonight, NBC's Arthur Kent is in
[0:38] Saudi Arabia with details of a dramatic
[0:40] allied air strike and Fred Francis at
[0:42] the Pentagon on the Iran angle. Arthur,
[0:45] we begin with you,
[0:47] >> Tom. An Iraqi tank column was smashed by
[0:50] Marine Harrier attack planes just last
[0:53] night just north of Saudi Arabia's
[0:55] border with Kuwait. Now, Pentagon
[0:57] sources tell us the Iraqis were trying
[0:59] to creep across the Saudi border to
[1:02] attack Allied forces when they were
[1:04] intercepted. 24 tanks and other armored
[1:07] vehicles were destroyed. Allied troops
[1:09] and at least one reporter reported
[1:11] seeing flames rising after the attack.
[1:14] And elsewhere in the Gulf today, other
[1:16] successes by Allied forces. The US Navy
[1:20] says that A6 intruders like these
[1:22] knocked out two Iraqi silkworm missile
[1:25] batteries today. The missiles at FA are
[1:28] said to have been targeted at Allied
[1:30] ships in the Persian Gulf.
[1:33] Over Iraq and Kuwait as well. Allied
[1:36] aircraft like these Marine FA18 Hornets
[1:39] are also flying hard.
[1:42] Fatigue among air and ground crew is
[1:44] becoming more marked now
