[0:00] Tonight,
[0:03] a surge in unemployment as another half
[0:06] million American jobs disappear. I'm
[0:09] Katie Kurrick. Also tonight, Israel
[0:11] rejects a UN call for a ceasefire. The
[0:15] Israelis say they won't end the
[0:16] bombardment of Gaza
[0:19] until Hamas stops firing rockets across
[0:22] the border. The Illinois House impeaches
[0:25] the governor, who says he's not
[0:26] surprised. And
[0:28] >> at the end of the day, I will be uh
[0:30] properly uh exonerated.
[0:33] >> Plus, the so-called financial expert who
[0:35] lives here once told followers the Dow
[0:38] would hit 40,000.
[0:40] >> What do you have to say for yourself?
[0:46] >> This is the CBS Evening News with Katie
[0:49] Kurrick.
[0:52] >> And good evening everyone. The US
[0:54] economy is hemorrhaging jobs. The Labor
[0:56] Department reported today that the
[0:58] unemployment rate soared 4/10en of a
[1:00] point in December to 7.2%. That's the
[1:03] highest rate in 17 years. More than half
[1:06] a million jobs disappeared last month,
[1:08] bringing job losses for the year to more
[1:10] than 2.5 million. We haven't seen
[1:13] anything like this in decades. And as
[1:16] Anthony Mason reports, the economic pain
[1:18] goes even deeper than those numbers
[1:20] might suggest.
[1:22] >> 2.6 6 million jobs were cut from the
[1:25] economy last year. That's the greatest
[1:27] decline since 1945.
[1:30] If
[1:30] >> we measure how the economy is doing on
[1:33] the basis of employment, it's doing
[1:35] about as poorly as you can imagine.
[1:37] >> And as bad as the unemployment number
[1:39] is, it only tells part of the story. The
[1:41] so-called undermployment rate, which
[1:43] counts part-time workers and those
[1:46] who've given up looking for a job, rose
[1:48] to a record 13.5%.
