[0:05] >> live. Kurt Lllo, Shauna Parsons,
[0:09] meteorologist Rod Hill, and Tim Becker,
[0:12] sports. This is the 10:00 news.
[0:16] >> Good evening. Huge flames and black
[0:18] smoke filled the air near Woodburn as a
[0:20] tanker filled with gasoline catches fire
[0:22] and explode.
[0:23] >> That accident completely shut down I5,
[0:25] trapping thousands of drivers on the
[0:27] freeway for hours. Here's a live picture
[0:29] of that stretch of freeway right now.
[0:31] About an hour ago, all the lanes
[0:32] reopened. You can see traffic moving,
[0:34] but it was a very different picture
[0:37] throughout the day. KPTV's Jim Hyde was
[0:39] there.
[0:42] >> The engine cab, and forward tank of the
[0:45] rig burned fiercely for more than two
[0:47] hours. State police say the tanker had
[0:49] just filled up with gas and diesel in
[0:51] Portland and was headed for Albany.
[0:53] Firefighters poured water on the flames
[0:55] and tried to keep the rear tank
[0:57] containing 6600 gallons of gas from
[1:00] becoming hot enough to burn. The truck
[1:03] did not crash. The driver had engine
[1:05] trouble, pulled over and summoned a
[1:07] mechanic. They were trying to drive on
[1:10] the shoulder to the next exit.
[1:12] >> Before they were able to get there, they
[1:14] noticed heavy black smoke billowing
[1:15] underneath. They stopped, got out, saw
[1:18] that there was flames, backed off,
[1:20] called 911. Drivers behind the troubled
[1:22] truck managed to stop safely.
[1:24] >> That was a fire in that tire. So then
[1:28] that truck pulled over and the whole
[1:30] thing was um just below explosion.
[1:33] >> You could tell when the when it really
[1:35] got open because the the flames just
[1:37] burst out.
