[0:03] >> Thousands more federal troops arrive in
[0:05] South Florida to help the victims of
[0:07] Hurricane Andrew. While President Bush
[0:10] denies politics is a consideration in
[0:12] the relief effort.
[0:15] This is the CBS Evening News.
[0:21] Good evening. I'm Edie Magnus sitting in
[0:23] tonight for Bob Schiffer. Along with the
[0:25] massive destruction Hurricane Andrew
[0:27] inflicted on South Florida, this storm
[0:29] also exposed some glaring problems in
[0:32] government's ability to handle a
[0:34] disaster of this magnitude. Soldiers are
[0:37] there, and today it was announced more
[0:38] are coming. Food and other necessities
[0:40] are arriving, too. But while some have
[0:43] finally found shelter or gotten to eat a
[0:45] meal, there are thousands of people who
[0:47] haven't been reached. We have a series
[0:49] of reports on the aftermath of Andrew,
[0:51] beginning with Jim Stewart, who's with
[0:53] US troops in Homestead, Florida.
[0:56] >> It's the biggest US military movement of
[0:58] men and material since Desert Storm. And
[1:00] although most of the soldiers sent here
[1:02] for hurricane relief duty are veterans
[1:04] of that war. Many said they'd never
[1:06] witnessed such destruction.
[1:08] >> In some ways, is this worse than Kuwait?
[1:10] >> Yes, really is. Not just because of the
[1:13] buildings and the people, but just like
[1:16] everything. It's like this town probably
[1:18] will never be the way it was.
[1:19] >> Today's first priority was again food
[1:21] and water.
[1:22] >> How about we got some soup?
[1:24] >> We got
[1:25] >> more and more the young are starting to
[1:27] show signs of serious stress.
[1:30] >> They should take him to the a station.
[1:33] >> Mom's coming right now.
