[0:02] World News tonight this Thursday, the
[0:04] president's trial in the Senate. He is
[0:06] referred to as a cancer on the body
[0:09] politic.
[0:11] We are here today because President
[0:13] William Jefferson Clinton decided to put
[0:15] himself above the law.
[0:18] Not once, not twice, but repeatedly.
[0:22] The Senate as jury, will his
[0:24] presentation change any minds? Will
[0:26] witnesses make a difference? The
[0:28] pressure to call them is mounting.
[0:38] From ABC, this is World News tonight
[0:41] with Peter Jennings. Reporting tonight
[0:43] from Washington. Good evening. The
[0:45] president's impeachment trial in the

[1:12] to the senators' sense of history, and
[1:14] to their belief that a sworn oath is
[1:16] sacred. He reminded them of how
[1:18] England's Sir Thomas More told his
[1:20] daughter 450 years ago that he had
[1:23] chosen to be executed rather than swear
[1:25] to a false oath. When a man takes an
[1:28] oath, Meg,
[1:29] he's holding his own self in his hands,
[1:32] like water. And if he opens his fingers
[1:35] then,
[1:36] he needn't hope to find himself again.
[1:39] The House managers' overarching message
[1:41] on the perjury charge was that failure
[1:43] to convict the president could lead to
[1:45] widespread lying i
