[0:06] >> This is the News Channel 5 Midday Report

[0:09] with Roy Hobs.

[0:12] >> Good afternoon everyone and welcome to

[0:13] the Midday Report. It's Thursday,

[0:15] January 17th, and America is at war.

[0:18] Here are the latest facts as we know

[0:20] them. The Defense Department confirms

[0:22] one US casualty so far in Operation

[0:25] Desert Storm. An American pilot. A

[0:27] British plane has also been lost. News

[0:30] reports in Egypt say arrangements have

[0:32] been made for the desertion of 50 Iraqi

[0:35] tank crews in Kuwait. Cautious optimism,

[1:10] very heavily defended areas and dropped

[1:12] some excellent bombs and destroyed a lot

[1:14] of targets.

[1:16] Defense Secretary Dick Cheney reported

[1:18] this morning that two Allied aircraft,

[1:20] one American jet and one British jet,

[1:23] had sustained damage during the attack.

[1:26] Present, we are in the process of using

[1:29] our intelligence assets to assess the

[1:32] damage that has been achieved.

[1:35] Uh, as that process is completed,

[1:38] decisions will be made about going back

[1:40] to restrike targets that
