[0:00] >> We'll see you at six.
[0:05] >> From ABC, this is World News Tonight
[0:08] with Peter Jennings.
[0:10] >> Good evening. We begin tonight with a
[0:11] major American arms sale. And because
[0:14] the president has announced that in the
[0:15] heat of a political campaign, it has
[0:17] become the lead item on our campaign
[0:19] watch tonight. Last week, while
[0:21] campaigning in Texas, Mr. Bush announced
[0:22] he would sell fighter jets to Taiwan.
[0:25] The planes are made in Texas. Today in
[0:27] Missouri, he announced that he will sell
[0:29] more than 70 of America's most advanced

[1:11] in St. Louis. Administration officials
[1:13] say the 9 billion deal will support as
[1:16] many as 40,000 jobs nationwide,
[1:18] including many in this swing state and
[1:20] many in politically crucial California.
[1:23] Officials insist Saudi Arabia needs
[1:25] these fighters because it's a loyal ally
[1:27] menaced by Iraq and by an Iran soon to
[1:30] be equipped with newborn planes bought
[1:32] from Russia. The president officials say
[1:34] cleared the deal with Israel during
[1:36] Prime Minister Rabbine's recent meeting
[1:38] with the presi
