[0:05] It's feared the fighting in Fallujah

[0:06] could be the worst combat faced by

[0:08] American forces since Vietnam. CBS News

[0:11] correspondent Elizabeth Palmer is

[0:12] embedded with US troops near the rebel

[0:14] stronghold and files this report on the

[0:17] initial attack. The assault started late

[0:20] in the evening. Tracers from artillery

[0:22] streamed across the sky on Fallujah's

[0:24] outskirts, punctuated by the flash of

[0:26] bombs dropped by US war plananes. The

[0:29] Marines waiting here on the outskirts of

[0:31] the city were dodging sporadic rocket

[0:34] and mortar fire all night. Coming from

[0:36] inside the city and also from the

[0:38] farmland around. By this morning, the

[0:40] aerial bombardment had slowed and then

[0:43] stopped,

[0:45] but the guns hadn't. They know we're

[0:47] here dropping mortars on us. Uh continue

[0:50] changing our our location. So they uh

[0:52] can't get one directly on us, but uh

[0:54] with counter battery, they're uh paying

[0:57] the price for uh dropping orders on us.

[1:00] >> These Marines are poised and eager for

[1:02] the main assault to begin.

[1:03] >> I I would say it's exhilarating. You

[1:05] know, I think uh you know, like a lot of

[1:07] the history books say, I mean, uh you

[1:09] know, you'll hit highs and lows, uh

[1:11] ultimate highs and lows as far as your

[1:12] emotions go.

[1:13] >> Mhm.

[1:14] >> You know, and certainly we're running a

[1:16] high right now. There are signs that at

[1:18] least the opening rounds of the big

[1:20] battle may already be underway. Reports

[1:22] coming out of the city say there are at

[1:24] least two very intense firefights going

[1:27] on in the city neighborhoods. Elizabeth

[1:29] Palmer, CBS News with the Marines near

[1:32] Fallujah.
