[0:07] >> This is the CBS Evening News. Dan Rather
[0:09] reporting. Good evening. China's oldline
[0:12] communist leaders tried again today to
[0:14] convince the world that they have total
[0:16] control and have the country unified.
[0:18] 84year-old headman Deng Xiaoping
[0:20] appeared in public for the first time in

[1:13] Supreme Leader Deng Xiaoping, rumored
[1:16] dead a few days ago, reappeared for the
[1:18] first time in three weeks and took
[1:20] responsibility for the crackdown that
[1:22] resulted in the massacre of hundreds, if
[1:24] not thousands of peaceful protesters.
[1:27] Communist authorities have called on the
[1:29] survivors to give themselves up to the
[1:32] police. They will use uh photographs
[1:35] that have been taken during the course
[1:37] of the demonstrations probably to
[1:39] include
