[0:03] A strong showing for Democrats on

[0:05] election day. They retained two key

[0:08] governor's seats after bitter battles in

[0:10] New Jersey and Virginia and rebuffed a

[0:12] power play by California's Republican

[0:14] Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. CBS News

[0:16] correspondent Sandra Hughes is live in

[0:18] Los Angeles with more. Sandra, good

[0:20] morning. Good morning, Renee. Well, as

[0:22] you said, Republicans didn't have much

[0:24] to celebrate last night here in

[0:25] California. The movie star turn governor

[0:28] saw his political agenda fall flat with

[0:31] voters. And back east, two hotly

[0:34] contested governor's races went to the

[0:36] Democrats.

[0:39] In Virginia, Democrat Tim Kaine defeated

[0:41] his Republican opponent Jerry Kilgore

[0:44] with support of the popular outgoing

[0:46] governor.

[0:46] >> They even said, "Let's compare how

[0:48] things are going in Washington, how

[0:50] versus how things are going in

[0:51] Virginia."

[0:55] We'll take that comparison any day of

[0:57] the week.

[0:58] >> It was unwelcome news for the White

[1:00] House because President Bush had made a

[1:02] lastminute campaign stop for Kilgore.

[1:05] >> A person who understands how the common

[1:07] man thinks.

[1:08] >> In New Jersey, another Democratic win

[1:10] for governor and another swipe at the

[1:12] White House. This by Senator John

[1:14] Cororsine who defeated Republican Doug

[1:17] Forester. Tonight, I want to thank the

[1:19] people of New Jersey for rejecting the

[1:21] Bush Rove tactics that we see in

[1:24] politics.

[1:24] >> Democrats seized on the victories. One

[1:27] party leader claiming they were a shot

[1:28] in the arm for Democratic chances to win

[1:31] control of Congress in 2006.

[1:34] Back in California, it was a long night

[1:36] for Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who

[1:38] spoke to supporters before the fate of

[1:40] his ballot measures was known.

[1:42] >> Whatever the outcome is, there's one

[1:44] thing we will do. We're going to

[1:46] continue to make California a better

[1:48] place for our citizens here and for our

[1:51] people of this great great state.

[1:53] >> But Boehner soundly rejected new

[1:55] spending caps, the centerpiece of his

[1:57] campaign. His other three measures,

[1:59] curbs on teacher tenure, redistricting

[2:01] reform, and limits on union political

[2:04] spending, all lost. He's a superhero,

[2:07] and if he can't do it, I don't know who

[2:09] can. After turning into anti- Arnold

[2:11] stalkers during the campaign, movie star

[2:14] Warren Batty and his wife Annette

[2:15] Benning celebrated.

[2:17] >> You have, I believe, uh made this scam

[2:21] of an extra election

[2:23] uh this abuse of the initiative process

[2:26] uh backfire.

[2:29] >> One Republican bright spot last night,

[2:32] New York's mayor Michael Bloomberg won a

[2:35] resounding victory. Renee CBS's Sandra

[2:38] Hughes in Los Angeles. Thanks,
