[0:00] Another fatal air crash today, the
[0:02] second in less than 24 hours. The latest
[0:05] disaster occurred in California. A Lear
[0:07] jet under contract to the California Air
[0:09] National Guard plowed into an apartment
[0:12] building in Fresno, spewing wreckage,
[0:14] flames, and casualties. CBS News
[0:16] correspondent Reed Galen has the latest
[0:18] details.
[0:21] >> They never heard it coming, witnesses
[0:22] said, but some saw it wobbling, almost
[0:25] free falling towards their neighborhood.
[0:27] >> No, all of a sudden the plane just came
[0:28] down. Down we went off the street. I
[0:30] didn't know where to look. Turned around
[0:31] to look and then boom, we just seen the
[0:33] whole big thing.
[0:34] >> The pilot was apparently trying to use
[0:36] this wide residential street as a
[0:37] runway, but the jet screeched and
[0:40] bounced down the pavement, breaking
[0:41] apart, and finally careening into an
[0:43] apartment building. Fire and chaos
[0:46] followed.
[0:47] >> The problem is that upper structures are
[0:48] burned so badly that we're having a hard
[0:50] time for the safety of our own personnel
[0:52] to be able to overhaul or salvage and go
[0:55] through those areas up there.
[0:57] >> Two people died, the pilot and the
[0:59] co-pilot. And at least 15 people on the
[1:01] ground were injured.
[1:03] >> I hear sirens, y'all.
[1:05] >> The Lear jet, a civilian aircraft leased
[1:07] by the Air Force, was cleared to land at
[1:09] the Fresno Airport just before noon
[1:11] Pacific time, when the pilot declared an
[1:13] emergency and overflew. It crashed 2
[1:16] miles southeast of the airport. The
[1:18] apartment complex was destroyed.
[1:20] The jet was on its way from Klamath
[1:22] Falls, Oregon. Fire Department
