[0:04] The Gulf War oil spill grows as each
[0:07] side blames the other.
[0:10] And Patriot missiles repel another Iraqi
[0:12] attack on Saudi Arabia.
[0:19] This is the CBS Evening News, Bob
[0:21] Schieffer reporting.
[0:23] Good evening. The United States today
[0:25] accused Iraq of waging ecological
[0:27] warfare in the Persian Gulf as one of
[0:29] the biggest oil spills in history grew
[0:31] larger by the minute. President Bush
[0:33] ordered pollution and environmental
[0:35] experts to the Gulf to help fight the
[0:37] spill. The Pentagon says that Iraq is
[0:39] intentionally pumping crude oil into the
[0:41] Gulf, but Iraq says the spill is coming
[0:44] from Iraqi tankers which were bombed by
[0:46] Allied warplanes. Juan Vasquez has our
[0:49] report.
[0:51] The magnitude of the environmental
[0:53] disaster became increasingly evident
[0:54] today as pools of black oil oozed across
[0:57] the beaches of Saudi Arabia. Even
[0:59] military officials were surprised at the
[1:01] destruction. I mean, the scale of this
[1:03] thing is really huge and it therefore
[1:06] does have to be carefully looked at.
[1:09] At last report, the spill was 8 mi wide
[1:11] and 30 mi long with oil still gushing
[1:13] out. At full capacity, the pumps at the
[1:15] sabotage terminal on Sea Island can dump
[1:18] nearly 2 and 1/2 million barrels of oil
[1:20] per day into the water. The oil is
[1:23] moving counterclockwise with the tide
[1:25] around the Gulf. So, what we see is a
[1:27] picture of a great
[1:29] disaster as far as
[1:32] pollution goes because
[1:34] this Gulf is a closed sea.
[1:38] The Gulf countries rely on desalination
[1:40] plants to purify most of the water they
[1:42] use. The purified water is also crucial
[1:45] to the soldiers of Operation Deser
