[0:01] Thank you.

[0:04] Thank you. Very happy. Very happy.

[0:12] [screaming]

[0:15] >> This is the CBS Evening News. Dan Rather

[0:18] reporting tonight live from Kuwait City.

[0:20] Good evening. The capital of Kuwait. The

[0:24] candle of freedom now relighted in this

[0:27] country scorched and torched by fleeing

[0:30] Iraqis. There's been the sound of

[0:32] distant artillery. But there are also

[0:34] indications that the war may be drawing

[0:36] to a close. President Bush has announced

[0:38] that he will address the American people

[0:40] at 9:00 8:00 Eastern time this evening

[0:43] amid indications that while the

[0:45] president has turned down Saddam

[0:47] Hussein's bid for a ceasefire, he may be

[0:49] in a position now to claim victory.

[0:51] David Martin is at the Pentagon. David,

[0:55] >> the Allied armies under General Norman

[0:57] Schwarzoff's command descended on the

[0:59] remnants of Iraq's Republican guards,

[1:01] trapped in a coffin corner with an

[1:03] uncrossable river at their back and the

[1:05] most powerful tank force in the history

[1:07] of warfare at their front.

[1:09] >> The gates are closed. There is no way

[1:10] out of here. There is no way out of

[1:12] here. And the enemy is fighting us in

[1:14] this location right here. The commander

[1:16] of Operation Desert Storm made it clear

[1:18] his mission is not only to liberate

[1:20] Kuwait, but to destroy the Republican

[1:22] Guard. And he seemed to take special

[1:24] satisfaction in that.

[1:26] >> The Republican Guard are the ones that

[1:27] went into Kuwait in the first place.

[1:28] They get paid more. They get treated

[1:30] better. Uh and oh, by the way, they also

[1:33] were well to the rear here, okay? So

[1:36] they could be the first ones to bug out
