[0:04] This is the CBS Evening News
[0:07] [music]
[0:08] with John Roberts.
[0:12] >> Good evening. John Roberts is on
[0:14] assignment. I'm Jane Clayson with a UN
[0:16] Security Council vote due within days.
[0:18] The White House today mounted one last
[0:20] push for a resolution authorizing
[0:22] military action against Iraq. As Joey
[0:25] Chen reports from Washington, the
[0:27] administration's top policy makers were
[0:29] out in force trying to convert four
[0:31] council votes into nine.
[0:34] While the president stayed away from
[0:36] reporters questions, you can just see
[0:38] his baseball cap as Mr. Bush slipped
[0:40] back in from his morning run. His sales
[0:42] force worked furiously to win support
[0:44] for the UN resolution that would set a
[0:46] new deadline for Saddam Hussein. Next
[0:49] Monday, the 17th, appears firm. It's in
[0:52] the resolution and we have no plans to
[0:55] change it and uh nobody has directly
[0:57] suggested to us that we change it.
[0:59] >> Though the administration is willing to
[1:00] go in alone, the backroom diplomatic
[1:02] efforts are at full tilt. Secretary Pal
[1:06] says the US still may be able to cobble
[1:08] together the nine security council votes
[1:10] needed to win the new resolution. That
[1:12] would include Britain, Spain, and
[1:14] Bulgaria, plus at least five of the
[1:16] currently undecided nations, Pakistan,
[1:19] Chile, Mexico, Cameroon, Angola, and
[1:22] Guinea. But the governments that oppose
[1:25] an immediate ultimatum won't budge.
[1:27] France, Germany
