[0:03] Along with Independence Day,
[0:05] Thanksgiving is the most truly American
[0:08] of holidays. And Americans everywhere in
[0:10] Bakersfield, in Birmingham, Boston, and
[0:13] Baghdad celebrated today in all the
[0:16] traditional ways. Trish Regan begins our
[0:18] coverage.
[0:24] >> The 79th Macy's Day Parade kicked off
[0:26] the holiday season in New York City
[0:28] today. So, you went to the parade?
[0:30] >> Yeah,
[0:30] >> it was fun.
[0:31] >> Yeah.
[0:32] >> But the fun almost turned tragic. A
[0:35] woman and an 11-year-old child were
[0:37] injured after a street lamp became
[0:39] entangled in balloon ropes and fell into
[0:41] the crowd.
[0:44] In Philadelphia, home to the oldest
[0:46] Thanksgiving parade in the country,
[0:48] things went more smoothly. And in
[0:50] Chicago, spectators braved cold and
[0:52] windy weather, but were spared the snow
[0:55] that plagued other states. Driving
[0:58] conditions in Detroit were treacherous,
[1:00] and holiday travelers in Ohio could see
[1:02] as much as 2 feet of snow. Cold weather
[1:05] in the east and an approaching storm
[1:07] along the West Coast are what many
[1:09] holiday shoppers will be waking up to.
[1:12] Tomorrow is Black Friday, the day many
[1:14] retailers count on to ring up nearly 10%
[1:17] of their yearly sales. Victoria
[1:20] Montagino is visiting New York City from
[1:22] New Orleans. She says cold weather won't
[1:25] deter her shopping. What are you looking
[1:26] for?
[1:27] >> Clothes, purses, shoes.
[1:29] >> Monica Russell says she plans to shop
[1:31] for those things and more.
[1:32] >> I'll be shopping every day and just
[1:35] going out to eat and find stuff. Just
[1:37] having fun here.
[1:38] >> So, you're going to be spending money?
[1:39] >> Yes, lots.
[1:39] >> But according to financial analyst
[1:41] Howard Dvidowitz, it will be a mixed
[1:43] season for retailers across the country.
[1:45] Luxury stores will see record profits
[1:48] while discounters will struggle.
[1:50] >> How much are energy costs affecting
[1:51] people's budgets this season? the the
[1:53] budgets it's affecting are those people
[1:56] who earn from $35 to $50,000 a year.
[2:00] That's why stores are promoting so
[2:01] early. They're trying to get the
[2:03] customers in before those home heating
[2:05] bills come in.
[2:06] >> On average, consumers plan to spend an
[2:09] estimated $681
[2:11] a piece this holiday season. Analysts
[2:13] say this will help increase overall
[2:16] retail sales by 5%. Less than last year,
[2:19] but still an increase. Trishan, CBS
[2:22] News, New York.
