[0:02] This is the CBS Evening News with Dan
[0:06] Rather.
[0:07] >> Good evening. Secretary of State Heg
[0:09] said today that attempts to resolve the
[0:12] growing diplomatic differences between
[0:13] the United States and the Soviet Union
[0:15] would begin soon at the ambassadorial
[0:18] level. But in an interview this evening
[0:20] on the McNeel Lair report, Heg virtually
[0:22] ruled out talks on any higher level such
[0:25] as a presidential summit. Robert
[0:27] Perpoint has the story.
[0:30] Hey made the possibility of a Soviet
[0:32] American summit sound more remote than
[0:34] ever, telling the two public television

[1:02] schedule and uh and we need some
[1:05] manifestations of other Soviet restraint
[1:07] in other areas, not the least of which
[1:09] is the recent activity in this
[1:10] hemisphere.
[1:12] >> Secretary Heg said the United States is
[1:14] watching very carefully Soviet
[1:15] preparations for military maneuvers in
[1:18] Poland, but he added that Soviet
[1:20] intervention is not considered
[1:21] inevitable or acceptable to the Western
[1:24] Alliance. Any intervention by the Soviet
[1:27] Union directly or in indirectly in the
[1:29] internal affairs of Poland would have
[1:32] grave and lasting consequences to East
[1:34] West relation.
[1:36] >> Hey revealed that some of the
[1:37] anti-government gerillas in
