[0:00] Tonight at 6

[0:06] >> from around the world and from CBS News

[0:09] in Washington, this is the CBS Evening

[0:12] News with Dan Rather. And tonight,

[0:17] CBS News correspondent Walter Kankite

[0:20] and the first exclusive interview with

[0:22] the new Egyptian leader, Hosny Mubari.

[0:25] >> Good evening. In the two days since the

[0:27] assassination of Anoir Sadat, the

[0:29] handpicked successor, Ashni Mubarak has

[0:31] been moving swiftly trying to

[0:32] consolidate power and to reassure

[0:34] Egypt's allies. But today, he took time

[0:37] out for an interview in Cairo with Water

[0:38] Kankite. The new Egyptian leader's first

[0:41] interview since Tuesday's tragic events.

[0:45] >> The president-elect received us in the

[0:47] living room of his home on the outskirts

[0:49] of Cairo. His left hand is bandaged,

[0:51] covering a wound from a bullet or shell

[0:53] splinter that pierced it as he stood

[0:55] next to Sedat at that fateful moment

[0:57] that was to alter his life and history

[1:00] in a degree yet to be determined. Mr.

[1:03] Vice President, you have said in almost

[1:06] every statement since the tragic events

[1:08] of Tuesday that uh you will continue

[1:12] President Sadat's policies.

[1:15] But do you have any idea now of any new

[1:18] approaches in either international or

[1:21] domestic affairs?

[1:26] Well,

[1:28] I could tell you uh in this field

[1:33] that after President Sadat's unexpected

[1:38] death or assassination,

[1:43] we have to follow

[1:46] the same procedure and the same line.

[1:50] They said in the air force when you were

[1:52] marshal of the air force that your men

[1:55] liked you very much but considered you a

[1:57] strict disciplinarian.

[1:59] Is that right?

[2:00] >> It's correct.

[2:02] >> I like this one.

[2:04] >>
