[0:02] Two major stories breaking at this hour.
[0:04] This man is under arrest tonight and the
[0:07] FBI suspects he's the notorious
[0:10] Unabomber. And search and rescue
[0:13] operations in the Balkan darkness after
[0:15] the crash of a plane carrying US
[0:17] Commerce Secretary Ron Brown.
[0:21] This is the CBS Evening News
[0:25] with Dan Rather reporting from CBS News
[0:28] headquarters [music]
[0:29] in New York.
[0:30] Good evening. We're following
[0:31] developments in two fast-changing
[0:33] stories tonight. The crash in Croatia of
[0:36] a US military plane carrying the
[0:38] Secretary of Commerce Ron Brown. More
[0:40] about that in a moment, but first a
[0:42] possible break this evening in the
[0:44] search for the killer known as the
[0:46] Unabomber. The FBI has arrested a
[0:48] suspect in Montana after he was fingered
[0:51] by relatives. Until and unless this
[0:53] citizen is proven guilty, he is of
[0:55] course presumed innocent. CBS News
[0:57] correspondent Jim Stewart, who's been
[0:59] following the Unabomber case for a long
[1:01] time, broke the arrest story today and
[1:03] joins us now from Washington with the
[1:05] latest, Jim.
[1:06] >> Dan, the longest and most intense
[1:08] manhunt in US history has zeroed in on a
[1:11] prime suspect and maybe nearing an end.
[1:13] Sources tell CBS News FBI agents today
[1:17] searched the home of a 53-year-old
[1:19] former mathematics teacher named
[1:21] Theodore Kaczynski just outside Lincoln,
[1:23] Montana and discovered enough evidence
[1:25] that they later took him into custody
[1:27] for questioning about the Unabomber
[1:28] case. Justice Department sources say,
[1:30] however, Kaczynski has not been charged
[1:32] thus far. Kaczynski was at the residence
[1:35] when agents arrive
