[0:02] breathtaking moment in the history of

[0:04] the country. What's different though,

[0:06] Scott, than when say when I first came

[0:08] to Washington back in 1968,

[0:12] is in those days and for many years

[0:14] after that, it was not just at these

[0:16] formal occasions that Democrats and

[0:18] Republicans came together.

[0:22] also met together informally after work.

[0:25] Their families knew one another. They

[0:27] all lived here in Washington. Now they

[0:29] all go home every weekend. Most of their

[0:31] families stay in Washington. They don't

[0:34] really know one another as they did back

[0:37] in those days. And I think I think

[0:39] Washington is the worse for it because

[0:41] that's when you had these great across

[0:43] the aisle relationships like Lyndon

[0:46] Johnson and and Everett Dirksen. You

[0:48] know, uh

[0:50] when Lyndon Johnson, Joe Califano

[0:52] pointed out on Face the Nation

[0:53] yesterday,

[0:54] he was one of the key aids for Johnson

[0:56] when he passed the Civil Rights Bills.

[0:58] And they when they signed that '64 Civil

[1:00] Rights Bill, they had Martin Luther King

[1:02] there. He of course had been pivotal in

[1:04] doing that. You You had all the members

[1:07] of Congress. You know who Johnson gave

[1:09] the first pin to? He gave it to Everett

[1:12] Dirksen, the Republican leader in the

[1:14] Senate because he said he couldn't have

[1:16] done it without him. And he wanted to

[1:19] make sure that Dirksen got full credit

[1:21] for that. You don't see that much

[1:23] anymore. And that's the kind of thing

[1:25] that we've got to find just a little of

[1:27] that now if we are going to get anything

[1:30] done.
