[0:03] This is the CBS Evening News
[0:07] with Dan Rather and Connie Ch.
[0:11] >> Good evening. Dan is on assignment.
[0:13] President Clinton will take the road to
[0:15] Damascus in a quest for Middle East
[0:17] peace. The president today added Syria
[0:20] to his travel plans for next week. He
[0:22] will be the first president to go there
[0:24] since Richard Nixon. The trip is shaping
[0:26] up as a highstakes political gamble for
[0:28] Mr. Clinton both at home and abroad.
[0:31] White House correspondent Rita Braver

[0:59] Clinton last January in Geneva failed to
[1:01] move Assad to peace. But sources say
[1:03] after days of highle discussions, both
[1:06] Secretary of State Warren Christopher
[1:08] and National Security Adviser Anthony
[1:10] Lake voted for next week's meeting, even
[1:12] though it may yield few tangible
[1:14] results. The administration is also
[1:16] downplaying concerns about Mr. Clinton's
[1:18] personal safety in the wake of Middle
[1:20] East terrorism. My purpose in going
[1:22] there is first to stand with our friends
[1:24] at this moment when they're standing up
[1:26] for peace and the enemies of peace are
[1:28] trying to derail them.
[1:29] >> The president also talked a
