[0:03] Tonight, new questions about the safety
[0:05] of cell phones after world health
[0:07] experts say they may, that's may,
[0:11] increase the risk of brain cancer. I'm
[0:13] Harry Smith. Also tonight, two Iraqi
[0:16] insurgents living in the United States
[0:18] are indicted on terrorism charges. Their
[0:21] alleged mission to kill American
[0:24] servicemen. Could the pilots have
[0:26] prevented the crash of Air France flight
[0:29] 447? We'll talk to an expert, Sully
[0:32] Sullenberger.
[0:34] And
[0:35] it's a whole new day in this school, a
[0:38] lesson in how to turn failure into
[0:40] excellence.
[0:45] >> This is the CBS Evening News.
[0:50] Good evening. Who among us does not
[0:53] spend at least part of the day talking
[0:55] on a cell phone? And that is why we're
[0:57] beginning tonight with new questions
[0:59] about a possible health risk. Today, a
[1:02] new report says cell phones may raise
[1:04] the risk of brain cancer. Again, we
[1:07] emphasize may because thus far there is
[1:10] no definitive link. But even the chance
[1:12] is reason for concern and reason to ask
[1:15] CBS News medical correspondent Dr. John
[1:17] Leuk to explain. An international group
[1:21] of scientists spent the last eight days
[1:23] pouring over all available studies on
[1:25] the possible link between cell phone use
[1:27] and cancer. They classified cell phones
[1:30] as quote possibly carcinogenic to humans
[1:33] in the same category as engine exhaust,
[1:35] certain food dyes, and the pesticide
[1:37] DDT. This means there may be an
[1:40] increased risk, but the evidence is not
[1:42] conclusive.
[1:43] >> I'll emphasize possible because that's
[1:45] where the evidence stands at present.
[1:48] The new classification was given in an
