[0:01] Tonight, Irene drenches the East Coast.
[0:04] It's now blowing over New England as a
[0:05] tropical storm after hitting the
[0:07] nation's biggest city.
[0:09] In the storm's wake, at least 18 dead
[0:11] and a path of destruction up the
[0:13] Atlantic coast.
[0:14] And surging floodwaters and power
[0:16] outages add to the misery of millions.
[0:20] Also tonight, firing back. Former
[0:22] Secretary of State Colin Powell slams
[0:25] former Vice President Dick Cheney's new
[0:27] memoir.
[0:27] You just label them flatly cheap shots.
[0:30] Well, yeah, they are cheap shots.
[0:34] This is the CBS Evening News with Russ
[0:38] Mitchell.
[0:39] And good evening. It is now Tropical
[0:41] Storm Irene and it's blowing through New
[0:43] England. At this hour, it is still a big
[0:45] storm but winds are down to 50 mph.
[0:48] Irene is blamed for at least 18 deaths
[0:50] in eight states. More than 4 million
[0:52] homes and businesses lost power.
[0:55] And with rivers still rising, severe
[0:56] flooding is feared across much of the
[0:58] already waterlogged Northeast.
[1:00] At the White House late this afternoon,
[1:02] President Obama went to the Rose Garden
[1:04] to warn that Irene still poses a threat
[1:07] and those in its path should be careful.
[1:10] Many Americans are still at serious risk
[1:13] of power outages and flooding,
[1:15] which could get worse in the coming days
[1:17] as rivers swell past their banks.
[1:19] So, I want people to understand that
[1:21] this is not over.
[1:23] And as we told you earlier, Tropical
[1:24] Storm Irene is now making its way
[1:26] through New England. We have a team of
[1:28] correspondents deployed along its path
[1:30] now and earlier. And we begin tonight
[1:32] with Wyatt Andrews in Mystic,
[1:33] Connecticut.
