[0:01] Just a brief review of our main story

[0:03] today. The first business day of the

[0:04] year 2000 has come and gone without the

[0:06] Y2K problems that had concerned so many

[0:08] people, only a few computer problems

[0:10] were reported anywhere. Finding from us

[0:13] this evening, as hard as it is to

[0:15] believe, even in 24 hours of Millennium

[0:17] coverage, last Friday and Saturday

[0:18] night, there were some stunning moments

[0:20] we didn't get to. Just as it was

[0:22] midnight in South Africa, there was a

[0:23] technical failure and we didn't get to

[0:26] see this live.

[0:31] They were dancing at Robin Island just

[0:33] off the coast from Cape Town. This is

[0:35] where the white minority government kept

[0:37] the men and women with ideas that

[0:39] threatened them during the long black

[0:42] struggle for freedom. This is where

[0:44] Nelson Mandela spent almost two decades

[0:46] as a prisoner before he emerged to lead

[0:49] a movement for reconciliation.

[0:52] In his former cell, Mr. Mandela, who's

[0:54] now 81, lit the candle of freedom which

[0:57] he passed on to his successor, South

[0:59] Africa's current president, Tabo Becki.

[1:02] Mr. President,

[1:04] my hand I display flame of freedom to

[1:06] you.

[1:07] >> Mr. Debecki passed it on to Africa's

[1:09] next generation.

[1:11] >> Today it feels good to be an African.

[1:15] >> At the moment the new century began in

[1:18] the darkness of the prison courtyard,

[1:20] the children formed the shape of the

[1:22] continent. Mr. Rbecki said nothing would

[1:25] stop African progress.

[1:27] >> However improbable it may sound to the

[1:30] skeptics, Africa will prosper.

[1:33] >> Africa will prosper. Thanks for watching

[1:36] this special edition of World News
