[0:00] News weather and the hour is brought to

[0:01] you by Tepic Laser Surgery Centers. Your

[0:04] vision for the future

[0:11] [Music]

[0:14] on World News Tonight this Tuesday. A

[0:16] nasty day in Seattle.

[0:19] Thousands of people angry and

[0:20] disenchanted with the results of freer

[0:23] trade in the world. On the Mexican US

[0:26] border, they are digging up victims of

[0:28] the drug culture. Reducing human error

[0:31] in the hospital. Get rid of the

[0:32] paperwork. Go to the computer. And we'll

[0:35] take a closer look at the lawsuit

[0:36] against Consumer Reports. It has to do

[0:39] with these road tests.

[0:48] From ABC News World Headquarters in New

[0:51] York, this is World News Tonight with

[0:54] Peter Jennings.

[0:55] >> Good evening. It's a pretty good rule of

[0:56] thumb that when the weather is bad,

[0:58] there is less likelihood of a large

[0:59] outdoor gathering being successful. Not

[1:02] in Seattle today. There were so many

[1:04] people upset with the World Trade

[1:06] Organization, the WTO, which is meeting

[1:09] there this week, that opening the

[1:10] conference today was a very dicey

[1:12] affair. The opening ceremonies had to be

[1:14] cancelled. For a while, the most radical

[1:17] demonstrators, who do not shy away from

[1:19] violence, were the center of attention.

[1:21] But throughout the day, thousands of

[1:23] people in Seattle and elsewhere were

[1:25] united in their opposition to the

[1:27] various consequences of trade in a

[1:30] global economy. We're going to begin

[1:31] with ABC's John Cochran.

[1:35] No American city is more dependent on

[1:37] global commerce than Seattle,

[1:40] but today it was home to protests

[1:42] against world trade.

[1:44] Police tried to clear a path for

[1:46] delegates.
