[0:02] >> This is the CBS Evening News with Walter

[0:05] Kronite.

[0:07] >> Good evening. President Carter is

[0:09] seeking broad bipartisan support for his

[0:11] toughened Soviet policy because of the

[0:13] Afghanistan invasion. Last night, Mr.

[0:15] Carter briefed about a hundred senators

[0:17] and representatives on the crisis. This

[0:19] morning at a White House breakfast, he

[0:21] consulted with key advisers from past

[0:23] administrations from Eisenhower's on.

[0:25] Robert Perpoint reports.

[0:28] >> Mr. Carter told his guests the current

[1:10] There was also I think a general

[1:11] consensus

[1:13] uh that uh more has to be done uh in

[1:17] order to uh restore

[1:20] uh the credibility of the United States

[1:22] particularly in terms of the vital

[1:25] interest that we have in the area of the

[1:28] Persian Gulf and in the area of the

[1:30] Arabian Peninsula.

[1:32] Cisco was forecasting a major goal of

[1:34] the president's current drive, the

[1:36] establishment of a strong American

[1:38] military presence in the Persian Gulf

[1:40] area. Discussions have a
