[0:00] Plus, nature shows off its incredible
[0:08] power. This is the CBS Evening News with
[0:12] Dan Rather reporting from CBS News
[0:14] headquarters in New York. Good evening.
[0:17] We begin tonight with a CBS News
[0:19] exclusive. Saddam Hussein has shot at
[0:22] and very nearly hit a high alitude
[0:25] American U2 spy plane. He did it with an
[0:28] upgraded, improved Russian-made missile
[0:30] and new techniques. It is now clear that
[0:33] Saddam is testing and challenging the
[0:35] new US president. CBS News national
[0:38] security correspondent David Martin
[0:40] broke this story and has the exclusive
[0:42] details
[0:44] tonight. The Iraqis caught the US by
[0:47] surprise and nearly shot down a U2 spy
[0:50] plane. Without any warning, the pilot of
[0:52] a U2 patrolling the no-fly zone over
[0:54] southern Iraq suddenly saw an
[0:56] anti-aircraft missile streaking toward
[0:58] him. It exploded behind and below him,
[1:02] close enough that he felt the shock
[1:03] wave, although not so close that it did
[1:05] any damage to the U2. The U2 operates at
[1:09] an altitude of more than 70,000 ft,
[1:11] which is out of range of most
[1:13] surfaceto-air missiles. But US officials
[1:15] say the Iraqis have modified some of
[1:17] their missiles, adding extra fuel to
[1:19] extend their range. Firing a specially
[1:22] modified missile at a high-flying U2
[1:24] could represent a new tactic in Saddam
[1:26] Hussein's longunning campaign to shoot
[1:28] down an American plane, targeting
[1:31] slowmoving reconnaissance aircraft
[1:33] instead of high-speed jets. Last week,
[1:35] another surveillance aircraft, a Navy
[1:37] Hawkeye radar plane orbiting over
[1:39] Kuwait, reported seeing a missile fired
[1:42] at it. That would be the fi
