[5:58] book entitled changed into his image but

[6:01] it's really about sanctification in that

[6:04] process and so I'm gonna be teaching and

[6:07] using the book as a reference point at

[6:09] times and so we're gonna be going

[6:12] through that series but if you'd like to

[6:13] get a copy of the book we have those

[6:15] available there are $15 you can get

[6:19] those and again that just covers the

[6:20] cost of the book what we had to pay for

[6:23] it but if you'd like to get one you can

[6:25] get one and that way you can read along

[6:28] as we go through the lessons and we have

[6:31] a larger screen available but it didn't

[6:34] have a stand with it and so we're

[6:36] working on getting a stand for it so

[6:41] I'll be teaching through the PowerPoint

[6:52] chapter 12 and verse number one and two

[6:55] this morning it is good to see you so

[6:57] thankful that you're here Romans chapter

[6:59] 12 verses 1 & 2 is going to be our

[7:02] springboard text for today and looking

[7:06] forward to this series that got place

[7:08] upon my heart so one of the reasons the

[7:09] laptop is here is not just for this we

[7:11] also are recording audio for the

[7:14] that are not able to be here yet because

[7:16] of health issues or different reasons

[7:19] and so we're recording the audio for

[7:21] this to give them audio CDs so they can

[7:23] follow along with us

[7:25] as we go through this series they don't

[7:27] have to miss out so Romans chapter 12

[7:30] verse number one the Bible says I

[7:31] beseech you therefore brethren by the

[7:33] mercies of God that you present your

[7:35] bodies a living sacrifice holy and

[7:38] acceptable unto God which is your

[7:40] reasonable service and be not conformed

[7:43] to this world but be transformed by the

[7:46] renewing of your mind that you may prove

[7:48] what is that good and acceptable and

[7:50] perfect will of God verse number 2 it

[7:54] tells us that we need to transform we

[7:56] need to be changed and biblical change

[7:59] is a process that doesn't happen

[8:02] overnight you don't go from being a lost

[8:05] sinner to a perfectly safe Saint

[8:08] overnight it's a process that's called

[8:10] sanctification becoming more like him

[8:13] so understanding biblical changes where

[8:15] we're gonna start off today mr. Bourg

[8:18] who wrote the book he and his family

[8:19] developed a mission and their family

[8:22] mission he sat down to go with his

[8:24] daughters and said we need to make a

[8:26] mission for our family we need to have a

[8:29] purpose statement for our family and so

[8:31] this is what they came up with the first

[8:33] part is to passionately know our God and

[8:37] to love and please him now that's a

[8:39] pretty good statement thus far too

[8:41] passionately not just occasionally not

[8:44] just a little bit but too passionately

[8:46] know our God and to love and please him

[8:48] but how do we do that how do you love

[8:50] God and please God by living together in

[8:54] harmony

[8:55] serving each other in humility growing

[8:59] together in godliness helping others

[9:02] with cheerfulness

[9:04] so we're knowing God we're pleasing him

[9:06] by living together in harmony serving

[9:10] each other in humility growing together

[9:12] in godliness and helping others with

[9:14] cheerfulness so again that's a good way

[9:18] for us to to have a heart for God and

[9:21] thereby he says as a family to provide a

[9:24] living

[9:25] advertisement of Christlikeness for

[9:28] others in this generation and for our

[9:30] children and the generations to come

[9:33] now that's a great mission statement but

[9:36] that was for his family but I see when I

[9:39] read that statement I see that a church

[9:42] family should passionately know God to

[9:46] love and to please God by living

[9:49] together in harmony serving each other

[9:52] in humility growing together in

[9:55] godliness helping others with

[9:57] cheerfulness and thereby as a church

[10:00] provide a living advertisement of

[10:02] Christ's likeness for others in this

[10:04] generation and for our children and the

[10:06] generations to come

[10:07] this could be a great statement for a

[10:09] church family to be a strong church to

[10:12] passionately know God and his family so

[10:14] here's some knowledge objectives so this

[10:18] is what we're going to try to accomplish

[10:19] through this series and especially in

[10:21] today's lesson explain God's primary

[10:24] goal for wanting you to make a biblical

[10:27] change God doesn't want you to stay the

[10:29] same he doesn't want you to stay sinful

[10:32] he wants you to grow into a relationship

[10:34] with him so he's gonna do that so today

[10:36] we're gonna do our best to explain the

[10:38] primary goal why God wants us to do that

[10:40] secondly this morning to summarize the

[10:43] Holy Spirit's role in making biblical

[10:46] change it doesn't happen by yourself it

[10:49] takes the Holy Spirit working through

[10:51] you in order for you and I to make a

[10:53] biblical change and then the third part

[10:55] is to explain the three parts of

[10:57] biblical change there are three parts to

[11:00] it I'm going to get into it to the

[11:01] lesson today but also with biblical

[11:04] change comes this to define the term

[11:06] discipleship now you've heard that

[11:08] before probably that we're discipleship

[11:10] how many of you have heard the word

[11:11] discipleship we've heard that before

[11:13] and explain the important part it plays

[11:15] in life's relationships now if I asked

[11:19] you what you thought the word

[11:20] discipleship means what does that mean

[11:23] to you

[11:24] somebody get toss out an idea what do

[11:26] you think discipleship means to teach

[11:31] someone else the Bible alright it

[11:32] depends on where you go in some

[11:34] denominations they'll say discipleship

[11:37] is a 13-week course that you have to go

[11:39] through in order to become part of the

[11:41] church depends on where you're at some

[11:44] of them say different things what are

[11:45] some other thoughts when you hear the

[11:46] word discipleship what do you think of a

[11:51] disciplined learner all right very good

[11:54] so there's a lot of different roles that

[11:57] discipleship plays and so we're gonna

[11:59] explain that it's important part so

[12:01] here's some application objectives is

[12:03] what I'm going to accomplish today I

[12:05] want to teach you the knowledge the

[12:07] things but if I just give you what it is

[12:09] and I don't help teach how to apply it

[12:12] in your life then we haven't

[12:13] accomplished anything

[12:14] and so here's the applications today

[12:17] respond by identifying specific areas of

[12:19] your life that need biblical change so

[12:22] as we discover what biblical change is

[12:24] and then we look at it we want to apply

[12:27] it to our lives and the areas that need

[12:28] it secondly respond by noticing times

[12:31] during your day when you can cooperate

[12:34] with God's plan to sanctify you so

[12:36] you're going to cooperate with God's

[12:38] plan it is his plan not my plan not your

[12:41] plan but God's plan to sanctify you

[12:44] thirdly respond by asking God to burden

[12:47] you for the needs of others around you

[12:50] who also need to make biblical change

[12:54] and so the Bible tells us to be

[12:56] transformed by the renewing of your mind

[12:59] now have you ever set out to do

[13:00] something but you didn't know how to do

[13:04] it and how to get it done well if that's

[13:06] your case then you aren't my friend when

[13:09] the Christopher Columbus award now let

[13:12] me tell you about Christopher Columbus's

[13:13] award this award goes to those who like

[13:16] good old Chris when they set out to do

[13:18] something they don't know where they are

[13:20] they don't know where they're going they

[13:22] don't know how to get there and when

[13:25] they arrive they don't know where they

[13:27] are and when they return they don't know

[13:29] where they've been now someone said that

[13:31] about Christopher Columbus because as

[13:32] you knows he sailed to America he

[13:34] arrived at a place he didn't know where

[13:35] he was he got there and he didn't know

[13:39] how he got there and once he arrived he

[13:42] didn't know where they got where he was

[13:44] and when he returned he wasn't for sure

[13:47] exactly the

[13:48] he took to get there and so that that's

[13:50] the award so biblical change this

[13:53] morning this studies about

[13:54] sanctification sanctification

[13:57] sanctification in a sense we are

[13:59] discussing in this study is progressive

[14:01] sanctification more like Christ today

[14:04] than I was yesterday and so progressive

[14:08] sanctification but as the Bible tells us

[14:11] we're not conformed to this world to be

[14:13] transformed by the renewing of your mind

[14:15] it starts in the mind and that which is

[14:18] good and acceptable than the perfect

[14:20] will of God

[14:20] so not just any change will do so how

[14:24] about a spoiled teenager a spoiled

[14:27] teenager who wins and soaks and

[14:29] complains but he finally stops his

[14:32] sulking is that the type of change that

[14:35] we would want we want him to quit whinin

[14:36] yeah but the reason this teenager quit

[14:39] wine is because his parents finally gave

[14:41] him what he wanted so he didn't really

[14:44] change

[14:45] he was just pacified with what he got

[14:49] and so it didn't change his problem he

[14:53] just stopped because now mom and dad

[14:55] gave him what he wanted what about a

[14:57] depressed wife who becomes her old

[14:59] cheerful self again she's finally happy

[15:01] well the reason she's happy though is

[15:04] her husband finally gave her a divorce

[15:06] papers so she doesn't have to deal with

[15:08] him is that the kind of change that is a

[15:11] good change no that's not the kind of

[15:13] change that's a good change I know how

[15:15] to a college student who gets better

[15:17] grades that's great right because she

[15:21] finally gets better grades because he

[15:24] switched his major to something really

[15:26] easy

[15:27] it doesn't really bring about to change

[15:29] this need or how about an embittered

[15:31] dock worker who stops his complaining

[15:33] about his boss he finally stops

[15:36] complaining about his boss you'd say

[15:37] well that's a good change yeah but the

[15:39] reason he stopped complaining is because

[15:41] his boss moved to a new facility it

[15:44] didn't really change him it just changed

[15:48] his circumstances see here the truth is

[15:52] this our problems are not usually from

[15:55] without they're from within and the

[15:58] change that God desires is from within

[16:00] us the Bible tells us

[16:01] in mark 7 21 through 23 from within out

[16:05] of the heart of men proceed evil

[16:06] thoughts adulteries fornications murders

[16:10] thefts covetousness wickedness deceit

[16:13] lasciviousness that shameless sensuality

[16:17] an evil eye Envy blasphemy or slander

[16:20] pride foolishness all these evil things

[16:23] come from within and defile the man

[16:28] and James chapter 4 verse 20 says from

[16:31] whence come Wars and Fighting's among

[16:32] you the outward visible problems write

[16:35] their outward we see them come they not

[16:38] hence even of your lust the inward

[16:41] desires of the heart that war in your

[16:44] members so to help illustrate this

[16:47] morning I need my life today to go into

[16:50] the kitchen right behind the kitchen

[16:52] door there's a little coffee pot can you

[16:55] grab a towel and bring me that coffee

[16:57] pot this morning as you think about what

[17:01] comes from within and what comes from

[17:04] without it really is something that we

[17:08] must need to understand so I thought

[17:10] about an illustration today to help

[17:12] illustrate that and so as she's grabbing

[17:14] that pot today we're going to illustrate

[17:17] what happens now I've got this morning a

[17:21] 100% pure black tea English breakfast

[17:27] oh oh yeah but it's already dirty

[17:31] somebody else messed with my water so if

[17:34] I had a cup of hot water today

[17:37] no I needed the clear water my son

[17:40] didn't clean it out evidently when he

[17:41] poured the water in the back so if

[17:46] instead honey you'll get a glass cup out

[17:50] of the cabinet and just dispense some

[17:52] hot water from the Keurig we'll talk

[17:54] about this this morning this is English

[17:57] tea it's black tea and it recommends to

[18:01] us to add freshly boiled water steep for

[18:03] four minutes

[18:04] or to the desired strength but as you

[18:06] think about the tea bag there are some

[18:08] lessons that we learn hot water doesn't

[18:10] create the tanks

[18:12] it reveals what's in the bag and this

[18:15] morning in our lives I want you to stop

[18:19] and think about your heart today and

[18:21] your heart being like this tea bag that

[18:24] doesn't want to open it's fighting back

[18:27] today it's first Sunday back and the

[18:30] devil doesn't work so we'll try this

[18:33] again so here's the tea bag most of us

[18:36] know how the tea bag works right you

[18:40] stick it in there and it turns water

[18:44] into tea how many of you enjoy a cup of

[18:47] tea so how many like hot tea how many of

[18:51] you like cold sweet tea with a bunch of

[18:52] ice in it unsweetened tea people you

[18:55] know whoever it may be all right and so

[18:58] in our lives the tea bag represents our

[19:02] heart and the hot water that we get

[19:05] shows us that when we place this tea bag

[19:08] into the cup it will reveal what's

[19:13] inside this tea bag the circumstances of

[19:16] your life the trouble sometimes that you

[19:19] and I face the frustrations of life the

[19:22] people in our life often reveal what's

[19:28] inside our heart and so God wants us to

[19:33] begin to work just set it right there in

[19:35] front that's great thank you dear God

[19:38] wants us to work on our lives and as you

[19:42] see it doesn't take long before it

[19:46] begins to reveal what's on the inside it

[19:51] didn't take long to be in some hot water

[19:54] before what was on the inside came out

[19:58] and I want you to think about your life

[20:01] if we put you in some quote/unquote hot

[20:04] water today what would it reveal about

[20:07] you what would it to us so the goal of

[20:12] change the result of sanctification is a

[20:15] believer who looks increasingly like

[20:18] Christ

[20:19] that's a grown up Christian increasingly

[20:22] like Christ Christ set the eggs

[20:25] sample in scripture on how to live and

[20:29] how to interact with people spiritually

[20:32] mature humanity is in essence

[20:36] christ-like humility the humility of a

[20:39] servant Christ was the servant he showed

[20:43] us how to live the servant life biblical

[20:47] change produces not pride but the

[20:50] complete opposite of that humility the

[20:53] humility of mind the humility of heart

[20:55] and the person of change because I can't

[21:00] make the change on my own the person who

[21:01] changes the Holy Spirit the Holy Spirit

[21:04] is one of three persons of the Godhead

[21:05] we are changed by him as we cooperate

[21:09] with his leading God wants everyone to

[21:13] change however if you and I don't

[21:16] cooperate with his leading we won't

[21:20] change like he wants us to change we can

[21:23] resist change now how many of you when

[21:27] it comes to everyday life you hate

[21:29] change some of you are not raising your

[21:33] hand because you don't want to change

[21:34] the posture of your hand you're

[21:36] comfortable where your hands at you

[21:38] don't even want to raise your hand now

[21:40] there are some people who we know hate

[21:42] change if you're one of those people who

[21:44] go to certain restaurants and you order

[21:46] the exact same every time you go to that

[21:49] restaurant and there's nothing else on

[21:51] the menu you have ever tried you're

[21:54] probably someone who doesn't like change

[21:56] how many of you are like that you have

[21:58] one particular thing that you order at a

[22:00] restaurant

[22:01] uh-huh yeah you don't like change

[22:03] because you're like this is good

[22:05] I know what's good I don't want to try

[22:07] anything else now it's different if you

[22:10] know that that one thing you know is a

[22:12] perfectly cooked steak with a baked

[22:14] potato and all that stuff and so you

[22:16] like yeah that's what I want I don't

[22:18] want the other stuff you know if you had

[22:20] to choose between the steak and a piece

[22:22] of chicken most of us you were gonna say

[22:26] steak knife something like no I don't

[22:28] eat red meat preacher well praise the

[22:30] Lord for you more steak for me

[22:33] but we are changed by the Holy Spirit in

[22:36] his wearing his life in Psalm 23 3 take

[22:38] your Bibles turn there Psalm 23 3 you

[22:41] know it but I want to read it to you

[22:43] because I think sometimes you can quote

[22:46] a verse and not stop to consider what

[22:48] the verse is saying so I'm 23 verse

[22:51] number 3 he restoreth my soul he leadeth

[22:55] me in the paths of what righteousness he

[23:01] doesn't lead me in a path to sinfulness

[23:03] he doesn't lead me in a path of

[23:05] questioning he leads me in the paths of

[23:07] righteousness God's Way is always right

[23:10] now how does he do that well he leads

[23:12] through his convicting voice don't you

[23:15] hate it when the Holy Spirit convicts

[23:19] you because you're doing something wrong

[23:21] and you know you shouldn't do that but

[23:26] the convicting power of the Holy Spirit

[23:27] so he leads us through his convicting

[23:30] voice he also tells us to be filled with

[23:33] the spirit to be filled with the spirit

[23:37] that means to be controlled by when you

[23:39] and I got saved we got all the Holy

[23:41] Spirit we're ever going to get now there

[23:43] are other denominations who believe in a

[23:45] second blessing and you get more spirit

[23:47] than you got the first time but the

[23:49] Bible doesn't teach that the Bible says

[23:50] that when we got saved we the Holy

[23:52] Spirit came in and dwelled us there's

[23:54] not less of him or more of him it's less

[23:57] of me and allowing him to have work in

[23:59] our life so be filled controlled by the

[24:03] spirit secondly this morning the process

[24:06] of change the process happens when the

[24:08] Spirit of God takes the Word of God and

[24:11] changes us to become like the Son of God

[24:14] so the Spirit of God takes the Word of

[24:17] God and changes us to become like the

[24:19] Son of God the Bible tells us be ye

[24:22] doers of the word and not just hearers

[24:27] only so this process of change is taking

[24:32] place as you've noticed the longer it's

[24:34] set here the darker the tea is becoming

[24:37] because what's on the inside will come

[24:42] out it wasn't that the hot water I could

[24:46] have taken cold water

[24:47] it would have taken watch this longer

[24:50] but eventually it would have came out

[24:55] because what's inside always comes out

[25:01] so the Spirit of God takes the Word of

[25:03] God and changes us to become like the

[25:05] Son of God that's the process of change

[25:08] another part of the process of change

[25:11] here he goes so we told you the

[25:13] knowledge Spirit of God takes a word of

[25:15] God helps us become like the Son of God

[25:17] so how does that happen in our life

[25:19] number one mortification of the flesh

[25:21] the flesh is restrained through the

[25:24] spirits enablement so the more I tried

[25:27] to be led by the spirit to be controlled

[25:29] by the spirit the more my flesh is

[25:32] restrained secondly meditation on the

[25:37] word the mind is renewed through the

[25:40] spirits illumination as I read the Word

[25:42] of God and I meditate on the Word of God

[25:44] it affects me the more I study his word

[25:49] thirdly is the manifestation of Christ's

[25:53] likeness Christ is revealed through the

[25:56] spirits fruit the fruit fruit of the

[26:01] spirit love joy peace what's next

[26:07] uh-huh we don't like that one duty

[26:10] normally when I said I'd love joy peace

[26:14] longsuffering gentleness goodness faith

[26:18] meekness temperance a but against such

[26:22] there is no law the spirit reveals the

[26:27] fruit did you notice the tints of the

[26:31] word fruit not fruits fruit when you

[26:37] live by the spirit you're controlled by

[26:39] the spirit all the fruit is visible all

[26:43] the fruit when it's not all the fruit

[26:47] it's not spirit fruit it's man-made

[26:51] fruit I went to visit my mom phew well

[26:57] actually I'm a bit knows my

[26:59] mother-in-law

[27:00] went to visit my mother home with our

[27:01] kids and there was a basket sitting on

[27:04] her table and my son Noah went up to the

[27:07] basket and he wanted to know if he could

[27:10] have one of the apples in the basket we

[27:14] said no he said why not and we revealed

[27:18] to him we took the Apple when it wasn't

[27:22] real fruit it wasn't real apples it was

[27:25] decorations if he would have tried to

[27:28] take in a bite we'd have made a trip to

[27:30] the dentist because it was hard it

[27:33] wasn't real fruit are you listening

[27:36] sometimes as Christian

[27:38] we got fruits but they're just

[27:41] decorations they're not the real thing

[27:43] they're for observing and other people

[27:46] to look at say oh yeah you got fruit

[27:48] look at that fruit but if they got close

[27:50] and inspected it's hard it's not real

[27:53] it's not the real thing it's for

[27:55] decorations only so the manifestation of

[27:59] Christ's likeness Christ is revealed

[28:01] through the spirits truth so here's the

[28:04] table of contents you ready part one

[28:06] restraining your flips part two renewing

[28:09] your mind

[28:10] part three reflecting your Lord pretty

[28:13] good table of contents alright so when I

[28:15] think about this process of discipleship

[28:19] though it's like spiritual parenting the

[28:23] studies about sanctification and

[28:25] discipleship that we're going to be

[28:27] doing over the next few weeks we're

[28:28] we're only an introductory lesson number

[28:30] one so we're just cracking the surface

[28:33] it's about sanctification and

[28:34] discipleship biblical discipleship is a

[28:37] certain kind of relationship between two

[28:41] believers to believers discipleship is

[28:47] helping another believer make biblical

[28:49] change toward Christlikeness

[28:52] discipleship is helping another believer

[28:55] make biblical change towards Christ

[28:58] likeness now if you don't know what

[29:02] christ likeness is in your life how can

[29:06] you lead somebody else to that spot in

[29:10] their

[29:11] are you listening whose job is it to

[29:17] lead others whose is it the Bible tells

[29:22] us the Great Commission given a church

[29:24] go you know all the world and preach the

[29:26] gospel to every creature we'd get that

[29:29] part but what else does it say baptizing

[29:33] them and teaching them to observe all

[29:36] things well who's to do the teaching the

[29:38] church members are to do the teaching so

[29:41] it's our process of discipleship so

[29:45] here's the centrality of deception

[29:47] parenting is discipleship as a parent we

[29:53] are disciple a to become like Christ

[29:56] we're not producing good kids we need to

[30:00] produce godly kids so the process of

[30:04] discipleship is parenting secondly

[30:08] edification in the local church is

[30:11] discipleship edification encouraging one

[30:16] another to live like Christ edifying one

[30:20] another is the process of discipleship

[30:23] so who does some edifying every Sunday

[30:26] and every Wednesday that's what I'm

[30:30] supposed to do I'm to edify you

[30:33] Christian education is discipleship now

[30:36] some folks choose different education

[30:38] that's their decision you can use public

[30:41] education to Christian education that's

[30:43] your personal decision but as a parent

[30:44] you should be the one whose disciple in

[30:47] your children to become like Christ it

[30:50] doesn't stop there it's just a resource

[30:52] or tool that you can use counseling is a

[30:56] discipleship counseling is discipleship

[31:00] management and Christian work is

[31:02] discipleship getting involved in the

[31:05] ministry of managing others and

[31:08] encouraging others and leading others in

[31:10] a ministry is discipleship but what's

[31:14] your role in discipleship number one you

[31:18] must have a working knowledge of

[31:20] sanctification you must know

[31:23] that sanctification is becoming more

[31:26] like Christ and you must know how to do

[31:30] that in Romans 12 we'd find it's by the

[31:32] renewing of your mind changing the way

[31:36] you think about things secondly your

[31:41] role in discipleship you must be

[31:42] practicing it in your own life

[31:46] discipleship responsibility falls on

[31:48] every believer in the room you should be

[31:52] teaching disciple encouraging another

[31:56] person in this church to be more like

[31:58] Christ whether it's your spouse whether

[32:01] it's a friend whether it's a teenager

[32:04] whether it's a child you must be

[32:07] practicing sanctification in your life

[32:09] so that you can then affect somebody

[32:12] else in their life now that's the end of

[32:16] the slideshow but that's not the end of

[32:17] the lesson so when it comes to biblical

[32:20] discipleship and the goals that we have

[32:23] what's on the inside will come out you

[32:27] and I must get to a point in our lives

[32:29] that what's on the inside when life hits

[32:33] us reveals him it should point to him

[32:41] everyone here today needs to have a

[32:45] heart desire to be like Earth's moon the

[32:51] moon of Earth has no light of its own it

[32:55] reflects the light of the Sun the moon

[32:59] has no light of its own it reflects the

[33:02] light of the Sun and as the Sun shines

[33:04] on the moon it reflects its light to the

[33:08] world the earth so we can see it all of

[33:11] us as believers need to act like the

[33:13] moon we need to reflect the light of the

[33:15] som Sun to this world so that they can

[33:20] see what Christ's likeness is in us so

[33:23] we need to reflect that so you and I

[33:25] need to be on this process of becoming

[33:28] more like Christ we need to have the

[33:31] opportunity to understand there

[33:32] some things in my life that are coming

[33:35] out that God is not pleased with there

[33:37] are some things in my life that I need

[33:39] to change and the only way to do that is

[33:41] with the power of the Holy Spirit

[33:45] working through the Word of God the

[33:48] preaching and teaching of the word of

[33:50] God and other people's edification and

[33:54] discipleship in your life and in my life

[34:00] all of us need to have the process of

[34:04] biblical change in our lives because

[34:07] we've got to be different from this

[34:10] world this world is not conforming to

[34:13] the image of Christ it's the direct

[34:17] opposite this world is very much about

[34:21] them and their desires their once very

[34:26] much about them and it's evident I'll

[34:28] speak on it more in the morning service

[34:30] this morning but in our lives to

[34:33] understand that you and I need to change

[34:36] now just because you've been saved a

[34:40] long period of time doesn't mean you're

[34:42] sanctified I know people that have been

[34:47] saved for years and are not sanctified I

[34:51] know pastors who struggle at times with

[34:56] sanctification you say surely not there

[35:00] are I have friends who I don't play

[35:04] softball with them I don't play sports

[35:07] with them because they can't handle it

[35:12] they're so competitive that they don't

[35:16] operate in sanctification anger comes

[35:20] out frustration comes out sometimes even

[35:24] words of discouragement come out and

[35:28] they're not living a sanctified life

[35:31] they're living in their flesh in the

[35:33] moment because the process of

[35:37] sanctification is a daily process for

[35:40] you and I daily becoming more like

[35:44] Christ

[35:45] and all of us know the hot water

[35:49] situations that bring out the worst in

[35:53] us you know what it is that brings out

[35:59] the area that you struggle with

[36:03] maybe it's people people get on your

[36:07] nerves and when people get on your

[36:10] nerves

[36:11] you get on them maybe it's something in

[36:14] your mind maybe it's a battle of

[36:16] discouragement and you're easily

[36:18] discouraged but why are you easily

[36:23] discouraged when you have the Holy

[36:26] Spirit living inside you when you have

[36:27] the hope of Christ why are you so easily

[36:30] discouraged and what happens is is we

[36:33] reveal what's on the inside there's some

[36:36] things that in our hot water situations

[36:39] reveal what's on the inside so this

[36:44] morning as we begin this study what is

[36:48] it that's on the inside that you

[36:53] struggle with today what is it that we

[36:57] can have someone pray for you someone

[37:02] come alongside and help you because the

[37:06] answer at the end of the day is you and

[37:09] I if we have those areas need to change

[37:13] if it's not in the image of Christ if

[37:18] you struggle with anger and it's not

[37:21] christ-like anger you can be angry at

[37:23] sin but when that sin makes you have a

[37:26] hatred towards people

[37:29] that's not christ-like Christ never

[37:33] hated people now he hated sin but he

[37:36] never hated people and when you think

[37:40] about things in our life if anger is an

[37:43] issue discouragement is an issue pride

[37:46] is an issue whatever it may be you need

[37:50] someone to come alongside and pray with

[37:52] you notice I didn't just say pray for

[37:55] you I said pray with you

[37:56] hey man pray

[37:58] with you because you should want that

[38:01] change in your life just as much as God

[38:04] desires that change in your life but we

[38:09] are not you and I need to go through

[38:10] this process of biblical change' we're

[38:12] gonna start this process of progressive

[38:14] education it's gonna be a great journey

[38:15] because at the end the ultimate goal is

[38:18] that you and I will be changed into his

[38:20] image and we will reflect the light of

[38:23] the Sun to a lost and dying world so any

[38:27] thoughts today we've got it just a few

[38:29] minutes any thoughts today about our

[38:30] lesson or about the subject of

[38:32] sanctification thoughts comments notes

[38:36] smiley faces happy thoughts I know so

[38:38] you've been out of the habit of talking

[38:40] in Sunday school you don't know what to

[38:42] do thank you I'm glad it worked out good

[38:52] any other thoughts comments how many of

[38:56] you understand that sanctification is

[38:58] progressive it's a moving process you

[39:02] don't reach the spot say now I'm

[39:03] sanctified I got it I'm good

[39:07] I've grown enough we never grow enough

[39:11] we should always be learning and growing

[39:14] more and I was laughing as I was

[39:18] thinking about this series and came by

[39:21] yesterday and brother Sajjad was here

[39:24] just to kind of get away do some

[39:25] studying and I was laughing on the

[39:27] inside as I was thinking about the

[39:29] lesson because he told me he said I

[39:31] asked him what he was doing some study

[39:33] and he said I never stopped studying

[39:34] never stopped learning and I was

[39:36] thinking about our lesson even though

[39:38] he's graduated from his college classes

[39:40] he still has to study and he still has

[39:42] to learn and even though we may have

[39:44] become quote/unquote spiritual adults we

[39:48] should never stop learning never stop

[39:51] studying never stop desiring to grow in

[39:55] the knowledge of Christ and how he can

[39:58] then take that knowledge it does no one

[40:01] any good for you to be a vault of

[40:03] knowledge you don't need to be a vault

[40:07] of knowledge

[40:09] need to be a machine of knowledge that

[40:11] then takes the knowledge and uses it to

[40:13] impact other people don't just store up

[40:17] all the knowledge to say I have a lot of

[40:18] biblical knowledge well good for you

[40:22] let's use it let's use it let's transfer

[40:27] that information to other people let's

[40:29] live it out in our lives it's not good

[40:32] enough to just have knowledge but to

[40:34] apply that knowledge to life and use it

[40:37] for the furtherance of the gospel so I'm

[40:40] looking forward to this series it's

[40:42] going to get exciting as we go through

[40:43] today just kind of introduction I had to

[40:45] I know I flew through a lot of stuff

[40:48] today but helping to get the ground set

[40:51] that we need to change and if we don't

[40:54] change this is what people's gonna see

[40:56] and if I took the tea bag out of here

[40:58] and I just set this out and so people

[41:01] walked by they would probably think

[41:03] what's in there may not be good they

[41:08] don't know that it's teeth they may

[41:09] think it's dirty water like the coffee

[41:13] pot I put clear water in expecting clear

[41:17] water to come out and evidently clear

[41:20] water didn't come out something in the

[41:23] process hindered it we can put the clear

[41:28] Word of God in to our lives and it come

[41:33] out differently because there's

[41:34] something hindering the process of pure

[41:37] water coming out yes ma'am

[41:47] right

[41:59] mmm-hmm how many of you know what it's

[42:05] like to find a pond of water that is a

[42:10] stagnant pond does not have a fresh

[42:12] source what happens when you find that

[42:15] pond has an aroma yeah it don't smell so

[42:22] good but when you find a freshwater one

[42:25] oh how wonderful it is when it's spring

[42:27] fed and exciting and that's how it is in

[42:30] our relationship with God if you become

[42:32] stagnant in your relationship with God

[42:36] the aroma of your hearts gonna start

[42:39] penetrating out what's on the inside is

[42:43] going to start coming up you're gonna

[42:44] start to smell it the aroma there's a

[42:48] movie that my wife and I in Jordan when

[42:50] we were youth pastors facing the Giants

[42:53] and there's a quote in there the

[42:56] attitude is the aroma of the heart your

[43:00] attitude of my attitude is the aroma of

[43:02] your heart what's on the inside comes

[43:04] out in our attitude and how we handle

[43:07] people and how we talk to people your

[43:10] attitude is the aroma of your heart so

[43:12] don't be stagnant always be fresh every

[43:16] day fresh from the source of water fresh

[43:19] from the word of God
