[0:00] five.

[0:03] In the wake of the quake, the ground

[0:05] still rumbles, the death toll rises, and

[0:09] man finishes the job the earth began.

[0:12] This is the CBS [music]

[0:14] Evening News

[0:16] with Connie Chung in New York and Dan

[0:19] Rather in Los Angeles.

[0:21] Good evening. Southern California today

[0:23] began digging out and coming back from

[0:25] the great earthquake of 1994. Everywhere

[0:28] you look, especially from this vantage

[0:30] point up here, there's some

[0:31] extraordinary scenes. This is I-5, one

[1:22] earthquake.

[1:23] For an overview and summary of what's

[1:25] been happening here in the wake of the

[1:26] quake, CBS News correspondent Sandra

[1:28] Hughes has a report.

[1:31] Overnight, the sky was lit by a fireball

[1:34] touched off by one of the hundreds of

[1:36] aftershocks.

[1:39] National Guard troops watched over a

[1:41] quiet curfew. There have been 73 arrests

[1:44] since the quake, much fewer than

[1:45] expected, but daw
