[0:06] >> from NBC News. This is NBC Nightly News
[0:10] with Tom Brokoff.
[0:12] >> Good evening. It's been a tough 24 hours
[0:14] for flying in America. Two crashes at
[0:17] opposite ends of the country. A commuter
[0:19] plane from Greensboro, North Carolina
[0:20] went down last night in foul weather
[0:23] approaching the Raleigh Durham airport.
[0:24] And today, a Lear jet hit in an
[0:27] apartment building in Fresno in central
[0:29] California, Sanwaqin Valley. The plane
[0:31] went down on approach to the Fresno
[0:33] airport. And as NBC's George Lewis tells
[0:35] us tonight, the Fresno crash created a
[0:38] scene from hell. A block swath of
[0:42] destruction on this street in a modest
[0:44] Fresno neighborhood. When the jet plowed
[0:46] into this apartment complex, the flames
[0:48] spread over a wide area, burning
[0:50] buildings and cars in the street. At
[0:52] least two people were killed and 15 were
[0:55] injured. Brent Schwigard of NBC station
[0:58] K was the first reporter there.
[1:00] >> That's the scene was unbelievable. As I
[1:02] walked down to uh Chestnut in Olive, two
[1:05] or three blocks down the street here.
[1:07] You can see that the plane hit the
[1:08] ground and skidded all along.
[1:10] >> Eyewitness CW Curtis said the plane
[1:12] narrowly averted, hitting a school in
[1:14] session.
[1:15] >> This u pilot of the jet that went down
[1:18] should be commended. He made one last
[1:20] ditch effort and he almost hit a school
[1:23] and he went up over these palm trees.
[1:25] There's another flash and then the the
[1:28] plane went down immediately. Rescue
[1:30] crews took the injured to nearby
[1:32] hosp
