[0:06] Baghdad says hundreds of civilians die
[0:08] in a raid on a bomb shelter. Washington
[0:11] says it was a military bunker. Quote,
[0:13] "We hit the right target." And new
[0:16] diplomatic moves as preparations
[0:18] continue for a ground offensive.
[0:22] This is the CBS Evening News. Dan Rather
[0:25] reporting with a war update edition.
[0:27] Good evening. In the air war against
[0:29] Iraq, the United States has used
[0:31] high-tech precision bombs to try to hit
[0:34] military targets and in so far as is
[0:36] possible, avoid civilian casualties.
[0:39] Today, that same high technology may
[0:41] have led to the worst civilian losses of
[0:43] the war. Iraqi officials say hundreds of
[0:47] people were killed when two missiles
[0:49] destroyed a bomb shelter in a
[0:51] middle-class neighborhood of Baghdad. US
[0:53] officials from the White House on down
[0:55] say the target was a military
[0:57] communications bunker. Reporters in
[1:00] Baghdad and photographs from the scene
[1:02] indicate that the victims may have
[1:05] included many women and children.
[1:07] Pictures of the Baghdad bombing include
[1:09] some graphic scenes of the reality of
[1:11] war. We caution you that some may not be
[1:14] suitable for children. CBS News
[1:16] correspondent Doug Tanell is monitoring
[1:18] the story from Aman Jordan and he begins
[1:20] our coverage.
[1:22] Bombs rained on Baghdad for 12 hours
[1:25] overnight, and by dawn, the smoke was
[1:27] still billowing from the bunker. Two
[1:29] direct hits had drilled through at least
[1:31] 9 ft of reinforced concrete and turned
[1:33] what was supposed to be a safe place
[1:35] into a fire pit. The Iraqis say more
[1:38] than 500 people were trapped by the
[1:40] fires in a number of underground
