[0:09] >> It's 10 past the hour. In the Balkans,
[0:11] French troops under NATO command have
[0:12] begun setting up around Macedonia.
[0:14] They're the first of thousands who will
[0:16] try to diffuse a simmering conflict that
[0:18] until recently seemed certain to grow.
[0:21] Preventing an escalation in the fighting
[0:22] is all the more important because of
[0:24] Macedonia's strategic position between
[0:26] Serbia and Greece, which is a NATO
[0:28] member. More now from correspondent
[0:30] Elizabeth Palmer.
[0:34] The fighting between ethnic Albanian
[0:36] rebels and the Macedonian army has been
[0:38] escalating all year.
[0:41] This is the violence that has chased
[0:42] civilians from their homes and
[0:44] threatened to explode into civil war.
[0:47] NATO wants it to stop before it gets any
[0:49] worse. A civil war in Macedonia would be
[0:52] a bloodbath
[0:54] and solve nothing.
[0:56] 3,500 NATO soldiers, more than half of
[0:59] them British, have been ordered to move
[1:01] into Macedonia.
[1:02] Their mission is very specific and very
[1:05] difficult. To collect thousands of
[1:07] weapons from Albanian rebels according
[1:09] to a deal worked out by the Macedonian
[1:11] government and then to withdraw again in
[1:13] 30 days. There has to
[1:16] have been a will to do this and that has
[1:18] to have been demonstrated by those
[1:20] warring factions out there.
[1:22] 400 Americans already stationed in
[1:24] Macedonia will participate in the
[1:26] mission, but only in a backup role.
[1:28] They're part of 9,000 US troops already
[1:31] in the Balkans.
[1:33] That's more than enough in the opinion
[1:35] of the White House, which wants to see
[1:36] Europe policing its own backyard without
[1:39] looking to the United States for
[1:40] leader
