[0:05] From ABC News, World News Sunday, here's
[0:10] Forest Sawyer.
[0:11] >> Good evening. Our lead story tonight is
[0:13] in Israel, where the murder of seven
[0:15] Palestinian workers has stirred the
[0:17] worst violence there in months. A lone
[0:19] Israeli gunman attacks the workers in a
[0:21] field outside Tel Aviv. The Israeli
[0:24] government condemned the attack, but
[0:26] angry Palestinians poured into the
[0:27] streets and by the end of the day, at
[0:29] least seven more Palestinians were dead,
[0:32] hundreds more injured. ABC's Dean
[0:34] Reynolds has our report.
[0:37] >> The victims were Palestinian laborers
[0:39] looking for a day's work in Israel. They
[0:42] had gathered on this roadside when,
[0:44] witnesses said an Israeli dressed in
[0:46] army fatigues told them to line up and
[0:49] then began methodically shooting them
[0:50] with an assault rifle. Seven men were
[0:53] killed and at least 11 wounded in the
[0:55] shooting that occurred just five miles
[0:57] from Tel Aviv. The gunman, a 21-year-old
[1:00] former soldier discharged early from the
[1:03] army for mental problems, later
[1:05] recreated the incident for police. His
[1:07] motive was unclear. Prime Minister
[1:10] Shamir said he was shocked and saddened
[1:12] by the shooting and he called for calm.
[1:14] I hope that the Palestinian Arab
[1:16] population
[1:19] will not utilize this atmosphere for
[1:24] increasing
[1:25] violence and bloodshed.
[1:28] >> Later, there were Palestinian and
[1:30] Israeli protesters outside Shamir's
[1:32] residence. When they vocally denounced
[1:34] his hardline policies, the police moved
[1:36] in to disperse them.
[1:39] Palestinian leaders said Shamir's
[1:41] right-wing attitude has invited
[1:43] anti-Arab violence.
