[0:04] This is the CBS Evening News. Dan Rather
[0:07] reporting. Good evening. New theories
[0:09] and new mysteries cropped up today in
[0:11] the investigation of last Sunday's
[0:13] British airliner crash. This much is
[0:16] known. One of the engines was on fire
[0:18] when the Boeing 737 went down, killing
[0:21] 44 people. The other engine, for some
[0:23] reason, was turned off. Both Britain and
[0:26] the United States began emergency
[0:28] inspections of the US-built planes.
[0:31] Correspondent Tom Fenton begins our
[0:32] report from London. The British
[0:35] government ordered the grounding of all
[0:36] late model Boeing 737s until urgent
[0:39] safety checks can be made as suspicion

[0:44] equipment problems. Investigators at
[0:46] first suspected it was the pilot who
[0:48] made a fatal error when he shut down the
[0:50] wrong engine. They changed their minds
[0:52] today after questioning Captain Kevin
[0:54] Hunt in the hospital for 45 minutes.
[0:57] Investigators now suspect the cockpit
[0:59] alarm system was faulty and that warning
[1:01] lights may have indicated a fire in the
[1:03] right-hand engine when it was the left
[1:05] engine on fire.
[1:06] >> It has been known to have happened on
[1:09] several different types of aircraft
[1:10] previously.
[1:11] >> One of the survivors today raised
[1:13] another possibility that the pilot may
[1:15] have been right when he believed both
[1:16] engines were malfunctioning. This
[1:18] passenger said he heard strange noises
[1:20] coming first from one engine and then
[1:22] the other.
[1:23] >> What actually happened then was there
[1:24] was a lot of noise out of the other
[1:25] engine. And at that point it sounded as
[1:28] if the other engine w
