[0:05] dangerous weather on the way. They help

[0:10] How some brave pizza parlor workers were

[0:13] rewarded today. A matter of life and

[0:15] death on an Idaho river. We will show

[0:18] you the amazing video of a kayak rescue

[0:21] caught on tape. Should moms be able to

[0:24] test their breast milk for alcohol?

[0:26] We'll tell you about a controversial new

[0:27] product that has some experts concerned

[0:32] >> from KGW, where the news comes first.

[0:36] This is Northwest News Channel 8 at 5.

[0:42] >> It's ve very icy, very slick.

[0:45] >> A fall freeze grips the Northwest. Snow

[0:48] and ice send cars sliding and bring the

[0:50] commute to a halt. And the wild weather

[0:52] isn't over. Tonight, temperatures drop

[0:55] dangerously low and freezing rain could

[0:58] be right behind. Good evening. I'm Tracy

[1:00] Barry

[1:01] >> and I'm Joe Donlin. We have First Alert

[1:03] Storm Team coverage of the fall freeze

[1:04] from the ice, the cold temperatures, and

[1:07] also what's ahead. We begin with Bruce

[1:09] Susman live in downtown Portland. Bruce,

[1:11] >> well Joe, the snow, ice, and cold has

[1:12] consequences many of us never think

[1:14] about. Take Portland's famous drinking

[1:16] fountains. These will be shut off by

[1:17] morning and the reason is the wind's

[1:19] supposed to pick up overnight that could

[1:21] blow the water onto the ground and

[1:23] create an icy mess. And speaking of an

[1:25] icy mess, that brings to mind this

[1:27] morning's commute.

[1:29] Some drivers face traffic backed up for

[1:32] miles. Sky 8 caught the amazingly slow

[1:34] and a slippery commute.

[1:36] >> So, you just hit a patch of ice. What

[1:37] happened?

[1:37] >> It's just patch of ice.

[1:39] >> Sam Tep hit some ice and flipped his rig

[1:41] on Cornelius Pass Road.

[1:42] >> High four-wheel drive.

[1:44] >> Didn't help you, huh?

[1:44] >> Nobody helped me. Snowy roads made it

[1:46] tough on commuters from Hillsboro to

[1:48] Highway 101 along the coast near

[1:50] Gearhart.

[1:51] >> It was a rollover. Just lost control.

[1:52] This is our third one we've had this

[1:54] morning. All about in the same stretch

[1:55] here. It's just a lot of snow and a lot

[1:57] of ice on the road.

[1:58] >> Driving Highway 101 was treacherous, but

[2:00] the views were incredible. Snow at

[2:02] Haystack Rock in Canon Beach and snow on

[2:05] the sand and seaside. But going over the

[2:07] coast range meant traveling Highway 26

[2:10] covered with both snow and ice. In

[2:12] Malala, schools closed. Kids rolled a

[2:14] snowman's body, and there was just

[2:17] enough white to snowboard.

[2:19] Outside Silverton, ranchers covered

[2:21] horses and brought their animals bales

[2:23] of hay to put on top of the snowy

[2:25] ground. Back in Portland, the West Hills

[2:28] were covered in white. And even when the

[2:29] sun came out, temperatures barely

[2:31] budged. A perfect day, according to

[2:33] mailman Andy Franco.

[2:35] >> I do. I love being freezing. So, I think

[2:37] that being a mailman works well for me.

[2:39] A cold job, but probably easier than

[2:42] this morning's icy commute. And

[2:44] hopefully tomorrow's commute will be

[2:46] easier. A lot of roads and bridges and

[2:48] overpasses have dried out with today's

[2:50] sun and dry weather. Tracy,

[2:52] >> thank you, Bruce. Quite a wild morning

[2:54] and tonight it's going to be even

[2:55] colder. News Channel 8's Matt Safino

[2:57] joins us from the First Alert Storm

[2:59] Center. Matt,

[2:59] >> well Tracy, there is some good news in

[3:01] here. Let's take you outside, right?
