[0:03] This is [music] the CBS Evening News.
[0:08] With Dan Rather in New York and Connie
[0:11] Chung [music] in Washington.
[0:13] >> Good evening. Here on Capitol Hill the
[0:15] pace got fast and furious tonight. Not
[0:18] legislation, the partisan griping and
[0:20] sniping. The rhetoric by and about House
[0:23] Speaker Newt Gingrich hit new heights.
[0:25] Meanwhile, the Republican agenda and
[0:27] President Clinton's push for a
[0:28] multi-million dollar bailout for Mexico
[0:30] got stuck in gridlock. White House
[0:32] correspondent Rita Braver reports.
[0:35] >> The President spoke in lofty terms about

[1:06] Today, Leach denied that he was
[1:07] referring specifically to complaints
[1:09] about Gingrich's controversial book
[1:11] deal.
[1:12] >> The reference was to the atmospherics of
[1:14] the House of Representatives.
[1:16] >> But Democrats weren't buying that.
[1:18] >> This memo seems to put the personal
[1:20] interests of the speaker above our
[1:22] national interest. It shows that
[1:24] Republicans would rather do the
[1:25] speaker's bidding than the people's
[1:27] business.
[1:28] >> For his part, the speaker claimed the
[1:29] loan deal is in trouble on
