[1:07] In his convention speech here tonight,

[1:09] John K's running mate plans to

[1:11] accentuate the positive, but he will

[1:13] also charge Republicans with quote doing

[1:16] all they can to take this campaign for

[1:19] the highest office in the land down to

[1:22] the lowest possible road unquote. And

[1:25] John Edwards intends to portray the

[1:26] election as a choice between the

[1:29] politics of hate and the politics of

[1:31] hope. I interviewed Senator Edwards and

[1:34] got the inside story on how he defines

[1:36] himself and the decision voters face in

[1:39] November.

[1:42] John Edwards got the job by running hard

[1:47] but running second.

[1:49] >> Did you ever think you'd be here? People

[1:51] shouting John Edwards next VP.

[1:54] next to me.

[1:55] >> No, of course not. No, I never thought

[1:57] growing up in a little country town in

[1:59] North Carolina to think I'd be here. Of

[2:00] course I would.

[2:01] >> Do you prepare for this by looking at

[2:03] something, speech notes, or just going

[2:05] to wing it?

[2:06] >> Most of it's in my head.

[2:08] >> Known as a brilliant trial lawyer,

[2:10] elected to the US Senate on his first

[2:12] try for political office. Nationally,

[2:15] John Edwards is now face to face with

[2:17] voters who know little about him. What's

[2:20] the one thing you suspect people don't

[2:22] know about you that you want them to

[2:23] know about you?

[2:24] >> The toughness that's inside me. I mean,

[2:27] I think they have seen enough of me to

[2:29] know that I'm optimistic and hopeful.

[2:31] It's my nature. But what's hard to see

[2:34] is the toughness that's there.

[2:36] >> With his wife Elizabeth and two young

[2:38] children out front with him, Edwards is

[2:40] a sunny presence. But the whole family

[2:43] knows there's a tough battle ahead. What

[2:46] other big difference is it between you

[2:48] and Vice President Cheney?

[2:49] >> Oh, I think we have a different vision

[2:51] of the world. I think the vice president

[2:53] has shown through his own actions during

[2:55] his administration uh that that these

[2:58] alliances, America being strong but

[3:01] being engaged with the rest of the world

[3:02] in a positive way so that we're not

[3:04] doing things alone. I think that those

[3:06] things are are not very important to the

[3:08] vice president based on what I've seen.

[3:09] One of the big differences is that John

[3:11] hasn't he still believes that the best

[3:13] way to accomplish something is being

[3:15] respectful with to the people with whom

[3:17] you disagree.

[3:18] >> Well, do you or do you not mean to

[3:21] suggest that Vice President Cheney

[3:23] doesn't always do that?

[3:24] >> I I uh of course Vice President Cheney

[3:27] is in position to speak for himself, but

[3:28] I think that certainly the recent news

[3:30] story suggests that he doesn't always

[3:32] behave that way. I don't think it's

[3:33] productive.

[3:34] >> Something specific in your mind about

[3:35] that?

[3:36] >> No, I I

[3:37] >> Good try. Think

[3:40] I I think I'll leave this alone.

[3:42] >> Elizabeth and John Edwards are learning

[3:44] to take on all kinds of questions under

[3:46] a national spotlight and still keep

[3:48] their sense of humor.

[3:50] >> Don't let her ask me questions. This is

[3:51] a very bad idea.

[3:57] >> If you were if you weren't doing this,

[3:58] what would you be doing?

[3:59] >> If I were if you weren't running for

[4:01] vice president, what would you be doing?

[4:02] >> I'd be taking care of your children.

[4:08] our children. Our children.

[4:09] >> Thank you so much.

[4:11] >> Criticism is yes, he's honest. Yes, he's

[4:14] filled with hope. Yes, he's filled with

[4:16] optimism, but he's still just a little

[4:18] too light to be vice president,

[4:20] particularly when it comes to foreign

[4:21] affairs.

[4:22] >> Not true. Not true. You know, it's not

[4:24] the length of somebody's resume,

[4:26] political resume. It's the strength of

[4:28] their vision and the strength of their

[4:30] character that tells you whether they're

[4:31] ready to lead. And I am ready to lead.

[4:34] Before John Edwards takes to the podium

[4:36] tonight, he'll be introduced by two of

[4:38] the people who know him best, his wife,

[4:40] Elizabeth and their oldest daughter,

[4:42] Kate. Straight ahead on the CBS Evening

[4:44] News, anti-semitism. It is making a

[4:48] major comeback, especially in one

[4:50] country. A look at where that's

[4:52] happening and why next.
