[0:01] This is the CBS Evening News with Walter
[0:05] Kronite.
[0:06] >> Good evening. Sentiment for boycotting
[0:08] the Olympic Games in Moscow next summer
[0:10] because of Afghanistan is growing. And
[0:13] as Marvin Calb reports from the State
[0:14] Department, the Carter administration
[0:16] has that possibility under active
[0:18] consideration.
[0:21] >> The formal decision has not yet been
[0:23] made, but from the president on down,
[0:25] it's now clear that the administration
[0:27] wants to boycott the Moscow Olympics.
[0:29] What's equally clear is that it's a
[0:31] tough decision that may take the US down

[0:45] Congress, when it reconvenes, to pass a
[0:48] resolution supporting the Moscow Olympic
[0:50] boycott. Spokesman Hoting Carter
[0:52] dismisses as ridiculous the charge that

[0:57] Olympics after Afghanistan. He says
[0:59] things just can't be the same.
[1:02] >> There must be a response uh from all of
[1:06] us to what has been a rather monumental
[1:10] departure and a rather fundamental
[1:13] violation of international law.
[1:16] and that uh [clears throat] this is a
[1:19] very definite, clear, straightforward
[1:24] statement to them that we do not intend
[1:29] uh [clears throat] to participate as
[1:32] though nothing had happened.
[1:34] >> The administration wants to appear tough
[1:36] not only to the Russians, but also to
[1:38] the Iranians. One theory here is that
[1:40] now that American newsmen are being
[1:42] booted out of Iran, Kulmeni may be
