[0:03] The US Air Force uses bombs to plug the
[0:06] Persian Gulf oil leak.
[0:08] And at the Super Bowl, security is super
[0:11] tight.
[0:16] This is the CBS Evening News, Connie
[0:18] Chung reporting.
[0:20] Good evening. US officials have taken
[0:22] dramatic steps to stop the flow of oil
[0:25] into the Persian Gulf, hoping to halt
[0:27] what is becoming the worst spill in
[0:28] history. American warplanes dropped
[0:31] smart bombs on oil pipes in Kuwait. Alan
[0:34] Pizzey explains.
[0:36] >> As the oil slick that Saddam Hussein
[0:37] deliberately started continued to
[0:39] spread, US forces set its source on fire
[0:42] by accident. During an attack on Iraqi
[0:44] naval units, the Sea Island oil terminal
[0:46] was hit. Oil experts told the military a
[0:48] fire just might be the best way to stop
[0:51] the oil outflow. So, US aircraft set the
[0:53] sights of their laser-guided smart bombs
[0:56] on what oilmen called manifolds, control
[0:58] outlets at onshore oil terminals.
[1:01] General Norman Schwarzkopf said American
[1:03] F-111 fighter-bombers hit one at each of
[1:05] two terminals.
[1:06] >> And you're looking right through the
[1:07] nose of the of the guided munition as
[1:10] it's flown straight into the small
[1:12] manifold area to destroy it.
[1:13] >> The second strike went as precisely as
[1:16] the first, but there were no guarantees
[1:18] that a military solution would end the
[1:20] problem.
[1:21] >> And I'm trying to show you
[1:23] that we try to do it in such a way that
[1:25] we're not out there destroying the
[1:26] entire economy of Kuwait by doing it.
[1:29] >> By late today, the fire and the flow of
[1:31] oil were greatly reduced, but the fire
[1:33] was still being fed by oil left in the
[1:35] nearly 13 miles of pipe
