[0:01] The Unabomber case. The first criminal
[0:03] charge is filed against the prime
[0:05] suspect after agents find bomb-making
[0:08] materials in his Montana cabin. He's
[0:10] described as a nerd and a genius,
[0:13] awkward with people, good with his
[0:14] hands. Tonight, who is Theodore
[0:17] Kaczynski? And President Clinton leads
[0:20] the nation in mourning for Ron Brown as
[0:22] searchers battle terrible Balkan weather
[0:25] trying to recover his body.
[0:30] This is the CBS Evening News.
[0:34] With Dan Rather reporting from CBS News
[0:37] headquarters in New York.

[1:02] Jim Stewart who broke the story of this
[1:04] suspect's arrest.
[1:07] >> Theodore Kaczynski, known to his Montana
[1:09] neighbors as the hermit on the hill, was
[1:11] paraded by authorities into his first
[1:13] court appearance today. It lasted only
[1:16] minutes, but it was a damning few
[1:18] minutes for the man authorities are now
[1:19] virtually certain is the Unabomber. In
[1:22] court, Kaczynski was asked if he was
[1:24] unable to afford a lawyer. Quite
[1:26] correct, he said. Do you have any mental
[1:28] problems? No, he replied. Legally,
[1:31] however, his problems are multiplying.
[1:34] According to an FBI affidavit, an
[1:36] ongoing search of Kaczynsk
