[0:06] 6.

[0:09] >> This is a CBS News special report.

[0:14] >> The clock is operating. We're underway.

[0:20] >> John Glenn, [music] return to space.

[0:23] Goal

[0:26] >> from the Kennedy [music] Space Center in

[0:27] Florida. Here is Dan Rather.

[0:32] >> And good day from the Sunsplash Kennedy

[0:34] Space Center here in Florida. It's a

[0:36] space shot for the ages and the aging

[0:39] and the next space age. Right behind me

[0:42] back there, Space Shuttle Discovery is

[0:44] all tanked up and fueled to go. 30

[0:46] minutes from now at the top of the hour.

[0:48] The mighty shuttle stands unprotected in

[0:50] plain sight now out there on launchpad

[0:53] 39B. Inside now are the seven crew

[0:56] members. After a steak and eggs

[0:58] breakfast, 77year-old John Glenn and the

[1:00] others suited up and went to the pad for

[1:03] final boarding. Of course, so much of

[1:05] the sky-high publicity and history here

[1:07] today is that Senator Glenn is fixing to

[1:10] be the oldest person ever in space. 36

[1:13] years after his and America's first trip

[1:16] to orbit.

[1:17] >> It's bumperto-bumper for the Winnebago

[1:19] crowd gathered along the Florida space

[1:21] coastline today. Crowds haven't been

[1:23] this big in years. And they are the

[1:26] VIPs,

[1:28] including President Clinton and First

[1:29] Lady Hillary Rotten Clinton leading the

[1:32] dignitaries who'll get a close VIP look.

[1:35] Let's check in with our CBS News space

[1:37] consultant Bill Harwood now for a quick

[1:39] status report on the launch. Bill,

[1:40] >> Dan, so far it's been a textbook

[1:42] countdown. The weather is absolutely

[1:43] flawless. No problems at pad 39B. The

[1:46] crew is strapped in. John Glenn looks

[1:47] comfortable. They all look like they're

[1:48] ready
