[0:00] On the next mont,
[0:05] >> the evacuation of the sick and injured
[0:07] from New Orleans moves into higher gear
[0:09] as relief efforts step up along the Gulf
[0:11] Coast. Still, a huge medical and
[0:14] humanitarian crisis remains. I'm John
[0:17] Roberts in New Orleans and that's where
[0:19] we'll begin tonight.
[0:21] >> I'm Thalia Shurus in New York. Evacuees
[0:23] by the thousands are arriving in
[0:25] Houston, where the Astrodome has reached
[0:27] its limit. And mental health workers

[0:52] Coast and swamped New Orleans, the flow
[0:54] of supplies in and the transport of
[0:56] victims out seemed to have finally

[1:03] concentrated on the New Orleans
[1:05] Convention Center where an estimated
[1:07] 30,000 people had been stranded. Rescue
[1:10] officials say 5,000 people have been
[1:12] plucked off rooftops, but they have no
[1:14] idea how many are still isolated in
[1:17] their homes. The Pentagon is sending
[1:19] 7,000 soldiers and Marines along with
[1:22] 10,000 more National Guard troops into
[1:24] the region over the next 3 days. The
[1:26] major US airlines have started an
[1:28] unprecedented airlift of victims from
[1:30] Lewis Armstrong Airport, while the
[1:32] federal government announced it is
[1:34] chartering three Carnival Cruise Line
[1:36] ships to house evacuees for the next 6
[1:38] months. And more fires are burning
[1:41] across New Orleans. Some caused by
[1:43] ruptured gas lines,
