[0:06] with John Palmer substituting for

[0:08] Jessica Santage and Dick Sha with

[0:10] sports.

[0:12] >> Good evening. The Sovietbacked

[0:14] government in Afghanistan released 2,000

[0:16] political prisoners today as Soviet

[0:18] troops continued to pour into the

[0:20] country. Muslim rebels say they are

[0:22] planning a Vietnamese style war of

[0:24] attrition against the Soviet occupation.

[0:26] Meanwhile, the Soviet troops appear to

[0:28] be digging in for a long stay. NBC News

[0:31] correspondent John Hart reports from

[0:33] Kbble.

[0:36] 10 mi south of Kbble, the Russians are

[0:38] digging in into the frozen ground and

[0:40] trenchments for themselves and their

[0:42] field guns. In the capital itself, the

[0:45] Russian presence is not so much seen as

[0:48] constantly felt. little reminders. An

[0:51] occasional jeep patrol, military

[0:54] vehicles getting priority at the

[0:56] intersections.

[0:59] And once in a while, bigger reminders as

[1:02] on Saturday when a couple dozen tanks

[1:05] just showed up at a downtown park for no

[1:07] apparent reason and then left. A

[1:10] maneuver quite visible from the American

[1:12] embassy where 30 Americans remain led by

[1:15] a charge defair, 10 of them Marines.

[1:19] There are maybe 75 other Americans

[1:22] living in Cabo. Teachers mostly.

[1:25] >> One of them is Larry Callahan of

[1:27] Phoenix, Arizona. He's been here more

[1:29] than a year.

[1:31] >> What are the Americans doing? Those

[1:33] remaining here.

[1:35] >> The Americans are keeping a low profile.

[1:37] They're staying out of areas that would

[1:40] be unsafe for Americans to be,

[1:43] >> for example. Oh, for example, uh an area

[1:46] where maybe uh a lot of Russians would

[1:50] choos
